LAST EDITED ON Jan-06-05 AT 09:29PM (MST)[p]Washington late archery hunt, I had a little success this year. You guys in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming aint the only ones with quality bucks. I guess I like that perseption because in the remote area I'm hunting I have only seen 1 other hunter in 4 hears. However I have seen numerous mature bucks. Check out this years buck.

He is 25 1/2" wide and 175 P & Y not a 190 but a good washington buck.

1st kill with my new Mathews Outback, its a good shooter. 40yds and I hit the 12 ring.

Muzzy 3 Blade 100 Grn. Love em. Bad to The Bone is right. Passed thru ribs on both sides and rattled out through the brush, I never did find my arrow.

Thats a great archery buck. Thanks for posting the pic. I want the Outback but now am wondering about the Switchback. Descisions, descisions. ;-)

I just looked at the specs for the switchback myself, looks pretty good. I would like to draw the Switchback and see what type of valley it has at 65%. If I had one complaint about the Outback it would be that it is ready to take off on you if you relax at all. Otherwise the lack of noise and hand shock is tremendous. I actually shoot the 31" better than my old 41" conquest. I picked up my old Conquest the other day and could not believe the hand shock compared to the Outback. If it were me I would definitely shoot the new Switchback before I bought.

Nice Buck Coonhound, curious... was that late or early season? How did you get the name coonhound?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-07-05 AT 05:18AM (MST)[p]I arrowed him during the late season, 11/20 to be exact. Coonhound is a nick name I gave my golden retriever. He has turned into a coonhound the last 2 months. I have shot 16 coons during that period, my retriever will chase them up a tree and howl just like a hound. If i don't go out and take care of the coon he will howl until daylight. There hasn't been much sleeping going on at my house with all that racket. Now that I am out chasin coons at all hours of the night the nick name has stuck on me also.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-07-05 AT 06:09AM (MST)[p]That's a very nice buck for any state..Im a native of Washington but haven't hunted big game in it for 20 years. Congratulations. The way prices keep going up in other states for nonresidents is going to force me to try my old areas in Washington again....

Don't mean to highjack the thread but I have some comments about the Switchback. I was looking it over at Royal Archery last night and noticed one thing that was very odd; there is not any serving at the lower part of the cable that pulls into the draw stop on the cam. Mathews has a new string material that is being used on the cable but I was still concerned. I am a fairly loyal Mathews shooter but this had me scratching my head.

Well I guess it's a big unit, it was arrowed in the Sinleheken, Not sure about the spelling.

Aw, I know exactly where you hunt, naw, just kidding, your the first person ive ever heard that hunts that unit. didnt even know where it was at. I hunt south of there in perrigyn unit.
Dandy buck, congrats.

Pretty close....Sinlahekin

Sweet buck. I've seen some dandies come out of that Tonasket country. Thats a great one to stick a stick into.

Colo3D,

Did you get a chance to draw or shoot the Switch back? I would be curius about the valley. I am asuming that it does not stop the same as the Outback and LX where the draw stop hits the dampener bracket. ????

Coonhound, where are you killing all those coons? You can be general. Do you live in E. Wash.?

Small town near the S.W. side of Mt Rainier. Interesting note, the last coons I shot, I shot 5 out of one tree. I left them there until the next day, when I went to get them a cougar had taken them. Didn't see the couger, but did see the tracks in the mud. A night later the dog is howling I go out to see if he has another coon, low and behold my golden retriever had the couger in a tree. I felt a little under gunned, 1:00am AA mag light and a 22cal. rifle. Couger jumped and ran havn't seen sign of him since. However, I have created a monster in my dog, he doesn't care what he chases, the last critter he cornered was, you guessed it, a skunk. Bummer!!!

Kirkl,

I have only been flingin sticks for 4 years, it has been the most exciting 4 years of hunting I have ever had. The other great thing is you get to hunt the Elk rut and the Muley rut, something the rifle hunters have to draw a special tag to enjoy. You ought to think about it.

Hey Coon,ssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... don't be given away our secrets up in there in Loomis...

Born and raised in the Tonasket/Loomis area and although I'm down here in SoCal now I still love the huntin' in my old stompin' grounds. I saw many bucks like that come out of there back in the day...

Very nice buck with a bow. Congratulations.

Thats a nice WA buck! Congrats! I have hound hunted all my life and had labs all my life. Have seen a couple labs tree pretty good, but never did good on a longer trail.

I've seen poodles tree cougars before, toys, not the big standard. Its funny how the cat/dog thing works....sometimes.

coon, sent you a PM. Had a couple of Q's for you about that unit. General Q's, I have my own location just wanted to compare notes so to speak. Great WA buck by the way.

Collville,

I would be more than happy to discuss the hunt. When it comes to my specific hunting area I think I will have to be a little selfish, hope you understand. I would love to here about some of your Washington hunts, minus specific locations.

Coon, I sent a PM just as I think some of the convo is off topic per se. I have NO, NO desire to ask about your location. I have hunted that unit and have a location there that I'll be doing more hunting in. My Q's were general about approach and experience in the area. I'd never put on a guy for their spot, it's beyond poor taste to do so. They're too damn hard to come by. If you'd like me to post the PM here, I will. Thanks

CH,

I love it, I actually shoot the 31" outback better than the 41" Conquest I used to shoot. The riser is only 1 1/2" shorter than the riser on the conquest. The Outback just moved the limbs to a parallel position. I feel it is every bit as forgiving as the longer bows.

I was in getting my oil changed and picked up Washington fishing and hunting news and saw your pick in there along with some other fine washington animals. a 13 year old kid had a 183 buck killed in Loomis.

Looks like Washington is coming around. That 183 has awsome mass, 13 years old, probably doesn't even know what a true trophy he has shot, I'm sure Dad does.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-23-05 AT 00:02AM (MST)[p]Coville,

I just figured out what a PM was, sorry for not responding sooner. You will find a response now. PM's are a great idea, I would enjoy comparing a few notes also.

Took the rack to the sportsmans show in Puyallup and had it officially scored. When I scored it myself I missed it by 3/8" Gross score was 172 5/8", Net 169 1/8". I also entered it into the head and horns contest with a little dissapointment. I was the only qualifying entry for typical archery mule deer. It isn't to much fun winning if your the only entry. Get this I entered an archery buck and won a rifle case, go figure. Thats alright, i'm not a purist.

I also entered it into the Washington State record book, they only publish it every few years. The book they had on sight would have ranked it #5 for archery Mule Deer. I think it will probably fall #10 or #11 in the new edition.
