Hello.
I have been hearing a lot lately that Gunnison has suddenly become the hot spot for muley's in Colorado. Last time I hunted there it was a small miracle to find a fork horn. Anybody willing to share some info ? Nothing too specific, maybe just what units seem to be producing ? Thanks.

Gunnison and the entire southwest have been producing hogs. Many large bucks are taken each year and never heard about. There was a 216 net typical taken I'm trying to get pictures of.
The big bucks are coming mostly out of the wilderness areas and private grounds. If your really serious about hunting the area I can turn you on to some good public land or private land if you got a need to spend some money.

That would be North of Blue Mesa Reservoir and extending into the West Elk Wilderness. Curecanti creek empties into the reservoir.

I have hunted elk there ... we did see a few deer but the elk hunting was better!

The two best areas that are producing most of the big bucks are in between Powderhorn and Lake city. I think the units are 66 and 67, they both have been regulated for a long time and have more mature bucks than most other areas. But there's a lot of units around the Western Slope now that are producing more and bigger bucks. You just have to have the points or cash if you want to hunt on private.

I hunted there back in the late 80's and seen the bigest buck ever, in there but he was way to smart for me back then....

We spent over a week in unit 67... We only saw a hand full of deer and only a couple bucks. No monsters, but a few nice ones. The area is on a draw for elk as well, but the trophy potential sucks big time. We only saw one bull that was a 6pt every thing else was a dink. I think they manage the elk about like the deer, give out just enough permits to keep the populations where they want it and really don't give a crap about quality...

I think the areas on the other side of gunnison would be your best bet. The 4-5 year wait probably isn't worth what you would get in unit 67... 66 on the otherhand holds some decent bucks though.

For anyone who would like to check out the trophy potential in 66 and 67 just take the hwy from the Lake City Bridge near Blue Mesa Reservoir, south through Powderhorn and into the Town of Lake City. When the deer are wintering its posible to see many trophy class bucks in a one day trip.

I'd love any informationn regarding these areas around gunnison. We hunted unit 65 this year and took some nice bucks, however, I seen some really nice bucks come in from around Gunnison. I know of a ranch in unit 62 that produced some bruisers that I could probably get a tag on. Any information would be appreciated. [email protected]
