Went out this morning to cut some fresh cat tracks in the new snow. Came up lucky. Went home and called my brother and we were on the track within an hour. 1 1/2 to 2 hours of a heart pounding run and we had the 7'3" cat treed. Not bad for my first cat. :)

NICE CAT! WE ALL APPRECIATE THE REDUCED PRESSURE ON THE DEER HERDS AS A RESULT OF YOUR EFFORTS!

BC!
Thats a bad a$$ cat! Every wonder how many deer that cat killed?
Bet at lease one or two a week!
What the season limit up in the great white north! How did you take pistol, rifle?

We have been after this particular cat for 2 years now. I know he's killed many a big buck in that time frame.
We are allowed 2 cougars a year. The season runs until Mar 31st, so I'll pick up another tag and keep on looking for tracks. :)
My bro took one by himself the other day too, so his dog is really working well. No special gadgets, only one dog and us running like madmen through the bush trying to keep up.
I took this cat with my 300 Win Mag.

Thanks BC!
Every year hunting I run into a sheep farmer here in Nor CAL named Wes and he loses a many of sheep(big cats eat them like popcorn)to Lions,Yokes,BlackBears! So he get his depret permits then cut his dogs loose tracks and kills them! He photos them then turn carcass over to Fish and Game!(lots of cool photos he had, though the years). I see a big cat every once a while! They must get shot at alot because they are alway on the nitrous!

Hey BCBOY,

Thanks for always posting awesome pics and not putting up boring questions or crap like that. You should start your own website.

As usual always look forward to your pictures steve. Great that you got pictures before you shot him. Nice to see the Putty tats go down, big problem where I used to work. How tough was it training the dog for your brother? I have been working on my dog wit shed hunting going OK but slow with tons of snow in Pg, I might try Training my ext dog for Cats.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys. I'm still quite amazed that I was able to take a big tom like this as my first cat. My bro was quite pi$$ed. LOL!
I'm definately going to get him mounted. My income will probably only allow a rug mount. The only problem is wall space in my small house. My bear rug might have to go on the floor. :) I still have plans on getting my wolf soft tanned. My budget is going to have to be flexible this year I guess. Lucky that the cat only cost me 30 bucks for the tag and about 15 for gas. :)

Bobcat,
Definately gonna have the backstraps. Looks like I'll get a lot of meat from this beast.

Congrats on the great cat, Steve. I alwys like your pics and it's especially good that you get the kids in there. You Canadian guys have it great; those of us from the south of you are jealous!

Funny, you got that cat for $45.....some people are willing to pay $4500 for what you got.:) Gotta love having the oppurtunities you have. Congrats again!

Awesome Tom. Steve, did you have to whack him twice? Looks like a rear leg and fron shoulder shot. Barf on the backstraps!!

He was a tuff bugger. First shot hammered him in the shoulder taking out his lungs. He started to climb higher and got in some thick branches. My second shot must have clipped a big branch as the bullet fractured taking him in the spine and rear leg knocking him out of the tree. I then had to track him for approx 200 yards to where he crawled under some thick blowdown crap and I finished him off with a neck shot.
Recently read some posts on here saying to even use a 22 on cats. I wouldn't want to try it on these big ol' Northern toms. Thought maybe I had too much gun when I started the day. Had planned to use the ol' Model 99 300 Sav. But haven't shot it for awhile so I grabbed the 300 win mag because I knew it was shooting dead on. Quite glad I chose it now. :)
Skinned out the head last night and put a tape on the skull. Measured 15 4/16. Looks like I may have a Booner for my first cat. Will have it officially measured after the 60 days. Either way, he's going to make a great rug mount. :)

Harry,
I wouldn't be too upset with missing Book by only 2/16th of an inch. That there cat is BIG 'UN! Congrats once again! Just because a cat or bear doesn't have the bone in the head doesn't diminish it's true size. I've been trying to get a big bear the last few years. I see one with a big head and big body, pull the trigger and he ends up as a Meat Head. LOL! It's not like scoring a trophy mule deer on the hoof. There is no way to estimate the animal until the flesh is gone.
BTW What was the length on that monster? Should look awesome in that trophy room of yours.

Guys, I might just say that ole BCBoy was a bit flustered about that big cat. I had a good laugh for he pretty near stepped on that Tom at the last. It would have been entertaining if that cat reached out and touched him, for it sure could have. To have that on video, man, just think? ROTFLMAO

LMAO!!!! True, I almost stepped on him. Could hear him growlin' and thought he was on the otherside of the blowdown. Then I looked down and saw his tail at my feet. LOL! No different when I've been in the thick stuff with a wounded bear. A guy can get pretty pumped.
But guys if your want to see good video footage, you got to see ol' horseshoe baying because his dog won't.

LOL!!! Those are the exact words you said to me when you saw the tom up close, dead on the ground. :)
