I"m sure I can spend hours on the internet deciphering code on the NV site, but someone here can probably help me alot quicker.... Nonres Mule deer tag? Whats it take to get one and are there preference points to build up? Are there a couple "hot" units that I should look into?

Thanks for any help, just trying to get all my apps in and get this nonres drawing game going!

Last year it cost the price of a hunting license. $142.00 This year could be higher because of the USO thing. Don

I have put in for nevada as a non-resident for the past 15 years. Even with the bonus points, it's still luck of the draw. I drew 33E last year with only 3 bonus points, another buddy of mine didn't draw 36 with 8 points. If you go to the Nevada Dept. of Wildlife website, and click on HuntNevada you can get the results of each zone with bonus points. Good Luck.

you build points in Nv by buying the license like someone said before. This does not put you higher on the list, just gets your name in the hat more times..ie.2 points, name in twice. Still luck of the draw. i am a resident, my wife drew elk with 9 points, took me 12. I have drawn good areas with 2-3 points, i know others that have drawn better hunts with worse odds with 0 points. I have NOT drawn average areas with 2-3 points, i know others that draw the same area with 0 points, as well as i have also in the past. So bottem line...points help, but no gaurentee. Hot areas? Well most areas have good deer, just have to hunt harder in some. Some areas of course are better. It doesn't take much time to look at the web site and find the results from the last couple of years and look for success rates and 4 point or better harvests. If you look for areas with few tags and alot of applicants you have probably found a better area, put that together with high success rate of 4 points or better and thats probably a good one. Good luck!

Nevada is a great place to hunt mule deer. In most units you can look foward to a relativley uncrowded experience, lots of public land, and you should be able to harvest a decent 4 point. I would not set your expectations to high. There are not that many 180", let alone 160" deer harvested each season. The "hot" units are easily determined by looking at the NDOW statistics on the website. Some big deer come out of easier to draw units that are less accessible. Sorry, but I'm not going to "decipher" the statistics for you because I do not know how you hunt and that's part of the "fun" of hunting in my humble opinion.

I'm pretty sure this is how Nevada works the bonus points. Nevada actually squares your bonus points. So if you have three bonus points, that gives you 9 chances plus the one chance for the current year. You can also apply for up to 5 hunts per species with mixed weapons involved. All 5 of these choices count, unlike some other states. Now for the depressing part. When you look at the Nevada Stats, they only list the applicants first choice. For example, somebody with 9 bonus points and a first choice of early rifle elk and a last choice may be archery elk. They've got 82 chances on the archery, but they're only listed for that hunt if it's their first choice (or they draw). Square all of the #'s and look at the odds again, they're not very good.

Still hoping.

Mule deer hunting in Nevada is an excellent experience. If by excellent experience you mean less hunter pressure than most surrounding states, steep barely accessable roadless areas where a deer can mature past a year and a half old, and quality game management. A guy can usually draw a tag every 2-3 years if you buy the bonus points ($142 per year). We put in every year and enjoy the heck out of it. In my opinion it is ten times better than Utah's general season. As far as units go you gotta put in the time and do your own homework. Hope I could help.
