what's the odds of putting in for the montana draw for deer your first year and getting drawn? i've heard you just about have to have a preference point to get drawn.

Its about 60% your first year, without any preference points. If you can get a few more people on your application, your odds will increase a little, as each person has a 60% chance, and if one draws, you all get tags.....................rf

Well there are about 9-10,000 applicants for something like 2300 deer tags. Most will have a point or two... so I would venture to guess that your odds are probably in the 15% range.

If you put other people in on your app you go in as one "number" I believe. So if that one number gets drawn then you all get drawn, but if it doesn't then none get drawn... that way you all get a tag and get to hunt or none of you do.

Last week I e-mailed the Montana director for the draw Neil Whitney. I asked him what the draw odds were for deer with one point for the upcoming year. His reply was estimated at 35% with one pt. So zero pts. will be tough.

so i guess its good to at least go on and put in for the draw with the hopes of drawing, but mainly to acquire the bonus point? do you get a bonus point for putting in and not getting drawn or do you have to buy the bonus point? also, can you just buy a bonus point for the next season? i guess maybe i need to contact the montana fish and game dept.

The only way you can get a "point" is to apply and not get drawn, but you have to pay $20 for he point too. Then when you put in again the next year you have to pay $20 just to use the point you have aquired. MT's "point" system is the best scam yet!

Good luck.

And it still does not guarantee you that you will get a tag if you keep paying them say for 10 years.
Bottom line, SAVE YOUR MONEY, and just apply and forget the "points system" period.
