Which unit is the best unit in the Gunnison Basin for big bucks. 54,55, and 66 all look pretty good. I saw some good bucks come out of that area last year. Are units 1,2,10, and 201 really that much better of a unit than the ones in the Gunnison Basin. It sure takes a heck of a lot more points to draw. Is there a lot of private land in 54,55,and 66.

I don't know a whole lot about the area, but it has recieved some publicity lately. I would bet the amount of points required to draw will increase this coming year.

The reason Gunnison is so good now is
5 years ago when the state went all draw
for deer Gunn did a 90% reduction in tags
while the rest of the state did much less.
The 3 NW Colo units have been draw since
around 1990 and have had a much longer growing
time than Gunn. I beleive Gunn deserves every
bit of its good publicity. If only we would
manage our elk that way in Gunn it could be
the premiere place in America for trophy elk
and deer. But money rules and dont hold your breath.

I believe it was you I chatted with before I left on my hunt in unit 65 last year. We did ok in the area considering it was our first time. We are looking for a ranch to lease in unit 65 or 62 for this year. I figure since it's in your back yard you might be able to point us in a good direction. We heard we might be able to pick up a lease from the Kinikins in town. We are also interested in landowner tags as well. If you can find us a ranch to lease I'd be more than happy to give you a finders fee. The reason we want to buy landowner tags is we don't think we could draw 65 or 62 on a second choice, and want to continue building points so we can maybe hunt somwhere in the Gunnison basin in the near future.

Thanks in advance Roy

At the Denver's Sportsmans Expo on Friday there was a lady there getting an 8x6 muley scored by Eastman's that grossed 210 and netted 197. I didn't get to see it unfortuneatly but it was taken near Gunnison. I'm sure its going to jump 2 or 3 points to draw at tag there this year.

BTW, there is a rumour going around that CDOW is going to up the buck tags in the Gunnison Valley by a lot because "there are too many bucks running around", like I said just a rumour but I heard it from several people that have good ties to CDOW. Better get your tag fast if you have the points, good luck !

There is astrong feeling to increase buck tags
in the Gunn basin because of the high buck doe
ratios.DOW supports this position many locals
do not.Hate to lose bucks over the winter such
as we are having in Gunn this year.Even if DOW
increases tags I bet it would be minimal.

Most all of the kinikin area is leased by an outfitter. Most of the rest of the area are small 40 acre tracts. Most of the quality private from owl creek pass to hwy 50 is leased by outfitters. There are landowner tags floating around but are hard to get. You could possibly find a lease but most likely not. If you lease an area in 62 most likely you'll want something on the southern end of the unit or in the agricultural land from colona to delta. The agricultural areas are not known for large numbers of deer, but occasionally some whoppers.
