Dont think your gonna get alot of help. Most of us are just going to want to send you a part of the state we dont hunt. Hope you cant blame us, alot of years of sweat and blood went into finding the quality areas we enjoy, and it seems there are less of em all the time. I am pretty sure all the Big mule in Mt migrated to Wyoming. Might try there. (sorry guys) Its all in fun. Good luck!
North Western....definitely. Go up the Yaak and climb to the top of the highest hill around and there will be monster bucks waiting for you! Take an umbrella.
Although that was a joke, i have heard before that the state used to raffle off a few tags on the Bison Range for muleys. anyone else heard of this before?
Not as far as I cam remember in my lifetime. Im wondering whats up with the struggle for control now and if something like that is an option in the future? I know animals are still harvested out of there for various wildlife studies.
I dont think I would be interested in shooting a buck out of there, with the fence and all, course it is a big fence (kidding again) plus I could never afford it. I wouldnt be opposed though to somone else doing that (and you know there would be a ton of people that would in a heartbeat) if the $$ went dirctly back into funding Mule deer research and programs in the West. That one dead buck might help a bunch of others in the long run.
LAST EDITED ON Jan-31-05 AT 09:47PM (MST)[p]I would be for having a raffle there. even though I know I'd never be personally able to hunt it, it would be interesting to see what kind of money it could pull in and even more so the size of the deer taken. I've seen some real nice ones up there and some even nicer pictures of some from the area. Ive also seen some really nice elk and sheep on the range, fun place to take pictures. And even though the bison are controlled, the elk and deer are very free roaming. It's also one of the few places in this part of the state to have an antelope herd.
The truth is that there isn't any place in Montana that has an abundance of big bucks. There are places that could grow one but the big bucks are hard to find. I live a good aria and spend as much time as I can scouting hundreds of square miles. I don't cover it all but after 25 years I have found the best arias. If I here talk of a big buck I try to find him. Most of the time I am disapointed. I am lucky to find two bucks that will gross in the 180s in a years time. In my life I have only seen four that would top 190. So far this year the two best bucks are in the 170s. They may be 180s by fall. Big bucks in Montana are a neadle in a haystack.

Lets go about this a different way, Are there any good outfitters , who take bowhunters , Looking for quality muledeer areas to bowhunt. Or looking to lease private land,Want a chance at quality 160-190 deer. MMeyers
Hi
as long as Montana keeps having a general season while the muleys are rutting you will not find much for big bucks. once in a blue moon a good one is shot( 190+), but mostly it is a fluke. we have great genetics, but they do not live long enough to get big. until our lazy fish cops get off there butts and manage for a older age class and not numbers i would look at a different state. wyoming is a great state for big muleys, the bow hunting in North Dakota is very hard to beat.
Here's a nice Montana muley that I doubt many would pass up. He had a monster 3x3 with him. As luck would have it (not), I took a 4x4 when the season came in that didn't come close to this guy.
LAST EDITED ON Feb-16-05 AT 08:51PM (MST)[p]In SE most outfiters will give you a decent chance at a 160, a few consitanly get 170's, If an outfiter takes one 180 class buck a year he is doing good. 190's are almost unheard of.
None of the four 190 class bucks I have seen were on outfited land. Three were on public and one was on an unleased ranch.
I see more nice bucks on private land, (160 to 175) but most of the big bucks I have found have been on public land.
I know two real well, one from Lewistown, one from Basin. Both hard hunters and dedicated guides. I used to guide with them but now we just try to meet up to shed hunt.
They sure took a couple nice bulls out of there last year. I did meet a kid there last year that was probably your coworker. I think that was his second year in camp. I had dropped in to camp for a night on my way to a muley hunt.
