Coyotes in the Bookcliffs

Some friends and I are planning on heading up to the Bookcliffs next week end to hang out and maybe shoot a 'yote or two. Ive never been coyote hunting and know nothing about it. I have been up in the Books several times and have seen quite a few of 'em hanging around. Can you all give me some recommendations on how to hunt them? We are not hell bent on killing anything, but think it would be fun to give it a try.

Also, if I were to kill one, Id like to make a pelt out of the fur. I imagine this is a good time of year to get a nice coat. Am I wrong? How much do you think it would cost me to get a pelt? Anything in particular I should do with the carcass after its shot to prep it for a taxidermist?

Thanks for any advice,

-Travis

About 5 years ago I shot a coyote, and skinned it myself. I paid about $60 to have the hide tanned.
I believe the hides are best from about Dec 1 to Feb 1.
BTW My little brother shot one a few years ago and cleaned it out like you would a deer. My dad laughed for about 3 days. The best (softest) fur is on the belly.
Also, that is one of the stinkiest animals I have ever skinned.
I do like my pelt though.

Sharptailed Grouse.

Don't know exactly where you are going to be, but I would give the Cisco area a try.

The best thing you can do is case skin the coyote as soon as you shoot it. Then you can freeze it, until you get it to your guy. It's amazing how short it takes for a hide to spoil and have the hair slip.

The hides should be in really good shape, unless it is rubbed. They are starting to breed, which also makes them a bit tougher to call in.

I know of a couple guys who have called down that way recently and didn't have very good luck. Hope you do better!

Cut down the back side of one rear leg, around the anus and up the other rear leg. From there work the hide down and off the entire critter.

I was down bow hunting the books last year come around a corner and there stood a little yote, filmed him for a minute then he started running down the road got him with the truck, then I had to stomp his head to kill him if I had it to do over I wouldn't have run him over the kids really didnt like it nor did the wife, after I explained to my kids that I just saved baby rabbits and deer my daughter with tears in her eye's said daddy you did good.. ;(

Drake,
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at your post. In ten years it will make a good story for your kids to laugh about, but I'm sure it was a little traumatic at the time.
Your story reminded me of one of my own. In the fall of 1996 I brought a girl I was seeing home to meet my folks during the Montana bow season. She had no hunting background, but was willing to go along. We went out hiking around, bugling for elk. After an afternoon of little activity, I spotted a little cottontail rabbit about 15 feet from me. I looked at her and actually asked if she was OK with me shooting it. She looked at me and a little sheepishly said, "Sure." I drew my bow back and let one fly, almost splitting the little guy in half the long way. Despite the enormous wound, he started SCREAMING and flopping around relentlessly. WHOOPS! She immediately burst into tears. I felt bad, so I hugged her and tried to comfort her. The whole experience was kind of miserable. It wasn't until a few weeks later that I found out that the most disturbing part to her was the fact that I was hugging her while simultaneously trying to stomp the little guys brains out and put him out of his misery. Our relationship was never quite the same after that. I hope she got some counseling or something.

Sad but funny. I think that would put a damper on a new relationship for sure.

You guys are killing me. That is some funny stuff. I know how that goes though, my girlfriend had a hard time with the whole thing at first but she is getting better.

Man After nearly splitting the critter in half and it starting to scream you would think that after all that excitement she would have to have extreme therapy just to get the image of you stomping the little critters brains out his ears.

LMAO I would have probably done the same except I probably wouldnt be huggin her I would be too busy trying to get the damn thing to quit screaming.
