coyotes and game

Last fall (November) my dad shot a cow elk with his bow just before dark. He came back the next day and found her. The coyotes had eaten a bunch of meat out of the hind quarters (doesn't show in the photo). The year before that, he had the same problem with a whitetail doe. Another friend told me that he also did the same thing with a whitetail doe, but found nothing but hide and bones the next day (no salvageable meat).
Have any of you guys had similar experiences?

Yeah that seems to be a common problem. They seem to go after the hind quarters first. We've found the best thing to do is leave an article of clothing or something with human with the carcass. There more leary of the human scent and usually won't come near. found it to work for black bear too.

In addition to leaving some clothing, take a leak around the animal. That should hold them off until you can get back.

I've used the 'urine' method with animals that I've found and cleaned out. It seems to have worked for the coyotes and bears, but we've found a few eagles and other birds still eating some lunch. In All 3 examples in my first post, the hunter did not want to push and possibly lose a wounded animal in the darkness. They waited to track and find the animals until the next morning. When they found them the next morning, the coyotes had already been there. BTW, this is cold, late season bow hunting in MT, so the meat is still good the next day (just ask the yotes).
I guess maybe we could try peeing under the stand where we shot it and hope that helps (Ha Ha).
