The prices to hunt the Navajo are not as expensive if you hunt Archery. Just something to think about, I am pretty sure you can not hunt the res. with out a tribal memeber on your hunt. I am planning on putting in for Archery deer with a couple of Navajo buddies of mine for this coming up season, we will be up on the New Mexico side in Dec. There are some monsters on the Res I can not wait.

I was told by an old lady that back in the day if they caught you way deep in the res, they would make you play russian roulette.
Honestly though, I have hunted the res and made recreation out of it for years and have had very little problems. Aside from a few mean looks here and there my experience with the Navajo has been pleasant.
I must also say that the deer huntin aint what it used to be 5-10 years ago. Secrets out. thank you age of information.

Shedcrazy

P.S. above story was really told to me by an old lady who served papers on the res.

Well i hunted the Nation this past year. The hunt was great! I didn't harvest anything during my archery hunt, but my rifle hunt i was successful. I was even drawn for an elk hunt that took place in Jan....unsuccessful, but what an adventure!
Well the prices are pretty much set into two different categories, Navajo and Non-Navajo. And there are your regular hunts and trophy hunts and trophy units. And prices are all different, example:
Archery Deer hunt...Non-Navajo.....190.00
General Deer hunt...Non-navavjo....990.00
Archery Elk hunt....Non-Navajo.....490.00
trophy elk Hunt.....Non-Navajo.....2990.00-3990.00
Genenral Elk hunt...Non-Navajo.....990.00
(As per Navajo Nation hunting regulations-2004)

Some rules you have to know, must have a Licence Navajo guide, must have completed hunter safety course, if you were born after Jan 01,1970.

As for the stories about the locals...never really heard of any that were life threating. But beware of them skinwalkers... Ha ha ha! Being Navavjo myself, i Hunted there almost all my life. There is some truth as to how the hunting was or is now, but i seen enough these past two or three years to know that there are plenty of MoNsTeR MuLeYs up there!

Happy Hunting!
Mike

That early archery deer price quoted above is wrong, they are more expensive. And the late archery hunt is $1000. I'm not saying this to be an antogonist, my brothers & I have wanted to hunt in December a few times but couldn't come up w/ the cash flow. If it was just a measly $500 bones we'd go every year guaranteed. We all grew up right next to skinwalkerville aka THE REZ. I had more Yazzie's graduate from my high school than there are Smith's in Utah.

I think there is a little confusion, Are people talking about the Navajo Rez or Apache Rez? I am hearing conflicting stories on prices vs guides and times.

Wait a sec, I think Im confused about something. My old man lives up in Vernal with the Utes. There isnt a price for a non tribe member to hunt up there. You simply CANT. Even even you go with a tribe member, you CANT. Im pretty dang sure Im right about this, but not positive. So obviously you can hunt on Navajo land for a price. Is this something that is decided on by each tribe, or federally? Are there other tribes that will sell their hunts? Which ones dont? Just curious. . .

as far as guides go it used to be non navajos on trophy hunts must have a navajo guide and no guide needed on the general hunts, but as of 2004 i dont think it is required that you have a guide for any of the hunts, i could be wrong.

Have the July 2004 - June 2005 Regs in front of me.
Application Fee - $10
Archery Deer Sept $190 Non-Navajo
Archery Deer Sept Unit 12 $490 Non-Navajo
Late Archery Jan $490 Non-N

Muzzleloader Deer Oct $790 Non-N
Youth Deer Oct $190 Non-N

General Deer Oct $990 Non-N
Trophy Deer Dec $3990 Non-N

Archery Elk $490 Non-N
Trophy Archery Eld $2990 Non-N
Trophy Elk $2990 Non-N
General Elk $990 Non-N

While the Proclamation indicated the Navajo Guide requirement was dropped, a supplement sent to applicants reinstated the Guide requirement for Trophy Hunts.

Obiviously these prices can change with the regulations for the upcoming hunting season.

"What are the prices of a deer or elk hunt on the Najavo Res?"

A: A bottle of T-bird and a can of Aqua Net. hehe.
