With regards to deer, elk, and sheep. Which States allows you to collect points without having to buy a license. If a licenses is required what are the typical rates for non-resident hunters. Trying to find a cheap way to start compiling points for the future. Thanks for the information.

Wyoming -- $7 for moose and sheep
Montana -- $20 sheep, moose
Colorado -- $3 sheep, moose, elk, deer, bear, goats
Arizona -- In the past $135 for license, will change this year
Oregon -- $76 for license
Nevada --$100 or more, can't remember
Utah -- $5

Unless I didn't read the rules right, in colorado you must submit the full license fee just for a preference point?

tex
That is correct, you have to remit the full cost up front even for a preference point.

George,

It can all get very confusing. The best deal for points is probably Utah and Oregon $5.00 each for the three you mentioned. Some states make you buy a point some give your money back after you apply and are unsuccessful minus some type of application fee of coarse. Some states do not even have points available for non resident sheep, goats, or moose.
Don't think you can get a full understanding from big game regulations or state game websites, if you are not sure and have a question call them they are usually very helpful.
I try to stay up on all the western states, so if you have a question and want more detail shoot me an email at [email protected]
Good luck,

Based on what may emerge as recommendations to the Colorado Wildlife Commission, Colorado might well conisder a change to the preference pt. system. The change would be to implement a charge for a preference pt. for those whom would not buy any nunting license. The charge could be as high as $40 yet could also be less. It is simply in the idea stage. A lot of folks see the pt. accumulators whom do not hunt alot of why preference pt. 'creep' is happening. Some of you are those folks. The statistics show about 46,000 applicants for preference pts. do not end up buying any hunting license whatso ever in Colorado. These folks simply play the preference point game and never fund wildlife management in Colorado. Based on discussion coming out the License Allocation Group, a public forum of various stakeholder interests, there is support for such a charge. Either hunt or pay a fee so that in the interim we can continue to fund high level wildlife management properly.

I just read that Wyoming is proposing to raise the 7 dollar fee on Sheep and Moose to 75 bucks. I thought that was a great deal for hunters, however the mighty dollar will win out and the average joe will be priced out. Wyoming is also starting a preference point system for deer, antelope and the proposed fee is 40 bucks. Oregon is not such a good deal for nonresidents. You have to buy the hunting license, 76 bucks then 4.50 per species to apply. remember the Oregon is one of the hardest states on non resident quotas. Idaho is also toying with the preference point idea for next year.

I am one of those people that just put in for points for CO this year. Why should I fund colorado wildlife Management if I am not Hunting there this year. The years that I have the time and money to hunt Colorado That is when I help fund the Colorado wildlife Management.

I apply to 5-6 states a year for a bunch of tags and it cost a lot of money. Some of the states I put in for make you pay for a licence or point fees and I pay them. That is part of the game.

If the money colected from the fees goes to a good cause for Wildlife then that is ok. If the money goes into a general fund for the state that is wrong and I don't support that.

If some folks want to just charge people for everything and make the average person drop out of the drawing that is wrong to.

Make these fish and wildlife departments accountable for the money they already get before you just give them another blank check.

Why is Colorado so strapped for cash when they sell so many high dollar non-resident licenses. How does a state like Nevada manage its game with less than 10% of the revenue?

The post concerning WY is correct and I took the time to write a letter concerning the rate hike. IMO $75.00/yr just to administer the point system on a computer system is a little steep. My opinion is that to make/keep it accessible for all, from the haves to the have nots keep the price down around $20.00 max per year. The $3.00 rate in CO is probably a little low. Then I researched my home state WA, and saw that it costs a non-resident almost $60.00 per year, per species, to accumulate points, which is totally rediculous considering what the quality is like here (probably few applicants anyway). Guess I need to try and clean up my own backyard before running off my mouth.
