Just sent in application and $340.25 for non res. montana deer.
My good buddy's son lives in Bozeman going to school. He hunted only 3 days last year and just hunted from home (within 45 min. or so) said he saw lots of bucks and a few really good ones. Ended up killing a decent 4 point. What do you guys think. Waste of money? Good choice? I hear it's a fairly easy draw???
THanks

Montana's advantage is that you can hunt during the rut for mule deer. There are only 2000 non resident deer combination tags and success without points runs around 30 percent. It is worth it but I wouldn't expect to get the tag. Also if you didn't send in the extra 20 bucks you will be in the same spot next year.

If you were to examine the numbers from the MT Dept of Game, Fish & Parks you will see the odds of drawing one of those 2,300 nonresident general deer tags decrease every year. The odds of getting drawn have been under 20% which, as you know, is less than 1 in 5. Good luck to you this year in that draw.

The March 15 deadline looms.

a couple of buddys of mine and i are going to put in for montana for the first time. i know without some points it can be kind of tough. i know a guy that gets drawn ever other year, but he always has a point from the previous year's draw. just wondering what you think the odds of getting drawn if your party is 5 members vs. 3 members. i may not and probably don't know a lot about the system, but wouldn't 5 members give you 2 more chances to get drawn?

rifleman1,

The answer to your last paragraph is NO. Does'nt matter if 1 or 5 in envelope and no points, still only one shot in draw. If I'm wrong, I stand corrected but that is the way I read it.
And I will state it again, like before I won't buy into MT point system after a discussion with a person 4 years ago in that F&G Dept. the point system is of no advantage in drawing, you can pay into the system and still never draw. It all boils down to the luck of the draw.

in the last six years I have drawn three times for deer only, I hunted very hard and the biggest buck I have shot is a 28" 6X5, not a great buck.
I have seen two bucks that would go 30", one of them a 2X2 and the other a 3X4. There is a lot of states that I would hunt before Montana but I have a lot of vacation and I love to hunt so I just keep putting in just to get away.
Good luck if you draw.

Hi Brian, Your odds will increase slightly if you max out your party application. You would have to get the mathmaticians on the website to give you the increase, but by yourslef you have a one in 5 chance. If you max out your application, each individual has that 1 in 5 chance, if one draws you all get tags. Like I said, I don't know how to figure the slight increase, but there is a little bit better one.................rf

According to their website the draw will about April 15.
Results will be available on line within days of that.
Tags or refunds should be recieved by end of April

I've been playing the preferance point system and it took me 3 years to draw last time. Maybe I'll get lucky and draw with 0 points this year.

It might be an easy draw for some, but I've been puttin' in for the last three years with bonus points. No luck. If you get drawn however, it's not a matter of gettin' your buck. It's just a matter of how big a buck you want. Good luck, Jack
