So I'm also considering purchasing either the 300 or a 7mm. My question is does getting a semi-automatic reduce the recoil to the point of not needing a muzzled brake and which gun would you recommend Browning vs. Sako vs Remington etc.

Thanks

A semi will reduce some recoil. I didn't know anyone made a semi in an ultra mag round. That is an awfuly long action to cycle, not to mention the pressure. You will also want to consider the drawbacks fo a semi auto. A semi is inherently less accurate than a bolt. This may negate the long range advantages of an Ultra Mag. They are also much more fickle due to weather and conditions. You have to keep a semi auto spotless clean for it to operate properly. Bottom line is you might be better off with a bolt. If the recoil is such an issue to you, you might want to consider a lighter caliber. At least look into a good recoil pad first. Then look into a muzzle brake, if you have to. But realize that they have their drawbacks too. I think the best advice is to stick with a bolt gun that you can handle and shoot well. You will always be better off with a smaller caliber that you shoot better.

The whole idea of an "Ultra Mag" is long range accuracy. Simi-autos, by nature, are not as accurate as bolt actions. If you want an "Ultra Mag" get a good bolt gun, if you want a "simi-auto" get a 30-06, or some other "mid range" calibur.
As far as what make to buy, get the one that you like best, Browning, Sako & Remington all make good guns. The Sako is probably the best of thoses three.
Don't put a muzzel brake on it until you have shot ot a few times, you might not need it.

I have a 300 Win. Mag in the Browning BAR and the Browning Stainless Stalker. I also have a 7MM BAR and a 7MM Winchester. There is a distinct difference in the kick between the BARs and the other bolt action rifles. I think that is due to the auto action taking some of the kick out of it but the BARs are also a little heavier which helps with the kick. I like the BARs but they can be a little finicky. I usually use my Stainless Stalker for elk. I did shoot my moose with the 300 BAR.

I really like the 300 Win. Mag for big game. It puts them down and I mean down.

I agree with pappabull. I also have a 300 win mag and it does a number on them. I shot a cow moose a few years ago that was facing straight away from me and hit her right at bottom of the hump on her front shoulders and it went through over two feet of her. I live in washington and I dont know of any game that I wouldnt use it on.
