Colorado Unit 21

Has anybody hunted Colorado's unit 21 for deer or know anything about it? I have heard it is a very good unit. I have 5 pref points and would like to draw a reasonably good unit to hunt this year. Any other suggestions? Also which hunt Muzz, 2nd rifle or 3rd rifle? Thanks for your help.

I have 8 points and was applying for that unit, but I am 2 points away and at the rate of increase I'd say I could draw in 4 years. With only 5 points I'd expect you'd need to wait about 10 years. You can check the actual number of guys ahead of you on the CO website, but I think you'll find I am close. The units to the east of there are getting some good press so maybe there will be a shift in applications.

I hunted there last year. A very easy unit to hunt with lots of deer. The later you hunt the better as the deer migrate in.

A friend of mines wife hunted there and they saw lots and lots of good bucks last year. She ended up killing about a 26" real pretty buck but thought that she may have pulled the trigger a little early from the sounds of it. Good area ......Gary

There obviously is no longer any secret about unit 21. The later seasons see the best bucks. The biggest complaints I have heard in the past ten years in that area are the over the counter elk huntes that run that country very hard, as well as an out of control poaching problem that is currently being addressed by the dow with added patrols and increased attention to the operation game theif program. The surrounding units have really felt the brunt of the unit 10 and 21 success. The surrounding units have been over run with people who think animals will stray from the very popular units. In my experience hunting a few of these units, its rarely the case. The tag numbers in 21 and 10 have done wonders to promote older class animals. These other units are almost always sold out, and in my opinion, the quotas are simply to high. The average age class and antlers drop dramatically outside these units.

The only hope I have is that we come out of the drought and that will produce more animals to stay up to pace with the increase in tags.

?I fear that the person whom asks ?why do you hunt? could never fully understand the answer I would offer?

Unit 21 and 10 aren't recieving the publicity they have over the past couple of years.. I doubt that they will keep jumping ahead 2 points every year.. They will taper off for sure this year, with a slight chance of a 1 point drop in points(from 12 to 11 & from 10 to 9) for the 3rd seasons.
It's going to be tough with 5 points.. Most of the really good areas are going to take between 6 and 12 this year.. I'm sure there will be a couple of good ones out there for 5, you are going to have to guess which ones.. Good luck!

Know the area well.
FYI, the prefernce points needed keep going up on the 3rd season. My pal drew in 2002, he need 8 points to be guaranteed. Last year you had to have 10 points.

As for those dam 4th season elk hunters, they are going to a draw this year, hopefully it will cut the amount of pressure down. Landowner tags are about $3,000 for 2nd season, and $4,500 for 3rd season.
