I drew one of the six tags for the thousand lakes unit. Has anyone ever hunted down there, or is there anyone who knows the area and wouldnt mind giving me some tips on where to go. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am assuming it's an any weapon tag that you drew. If it is I would look extremely long and hard around Geyser, Hen's Peak, Pole Canyon, and Riley Springs. They are all in the same general area on the west-side slopes but I have seen several decent bucks in the area over the years. The only thing I hate about the rifle season on the 1,000 lakes is that the general spike elk hunt runs right up to a day or two before your limited entry buck hunt. The elk hunters do scatter the bucks like crazy so just because you find one early doesn't mean he'll stick around for the hunt. If you want to try and track a buck up I would head over on the northeast side of the unit above the Baker Ranch and hunt around Solomon's basin area. Fewer deer but older age class bucks could possibly be found. With moisture what it is, this year should be awesome but keep in mind, if you don't find what you're after you have until the hunt starts to turn your tag back in as well and keep your points. Keep me posted on how your scouting goes, I know I will be around the 1,000 lakes a bit this year and would love to help out where I can. Email me at [email protected] GOOD LUCK!
