Tempers heat up over naming of new Owyhee County wilderness unit.
WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama signed into law on Monday the Omnibus Lands package, a monumental public lands bill that carves out half a million acres of wilderness in Idaho and 2 million acres nationwide. In this package is Idaho Senator Mike Crapo?s Owyhee Initiative provision. This will designate 517,000 acres of public land in the southwest corner of Idaho as wilderness, in six units, release 199,000 acres of wilderness study areas to non-wilderness multiple use management and designate 316 miles of Wild and Scenic Rivers.
While The Owyhee Initiative has always been controversial, it was made even more contentious with an unknown amendment sponsored by Nevada Senator Harry Reid which names one of the six wilderness units after Claude Dallas Jr. Dallas, folk hero to many, ruthless murderer to some, killed two Idaho Fish & Game Officers in 1981 at his Bull Basin camp on the South Fork of the Owyhee River claiming self-defense.
