I drew the Paunsaugunt archery tag after 7 years of applying. I've hunted other areas in the general archery zone & season but have never really been in the Paunsaugunt unit- I plan to start scouting early. Has anyone hunted the archery season that's willing to give any advise on how they hunted the unit & where I might start my scouting?

I would start up in the high country. More than half of the huntable deer live up there during the archery season. The others live on private, and a precious few are scattered on the winter range.
Tropic reservoir is your starting point. It is good hunting in all directions from there out to the pink cliffs. Expect road hunters, but that is a good way to find your deer also. There are few places to really set up and glass a lot of country. The area is timbered and thick.
Good luck, and I hope this will get you started.

I echo dearbedead's comments, With some good scouting up near Tropic Reservoir and south of there you'll find a buck you'll want to put your tag on. Good luck.

Congrats man that is way cool. I drew an archery limited enrty tag for West Desert Vernon . It's no Pauns tag but I am stoked as well. Anyways I have a few family members that have drawn Pauns tags and killed great bucks in the Tropic area. So that would be my advice as well... Good Luck man.

JDH I see you drew as well. Now that's just not right to have that kind of luck two years in a row! I look forward to the article.

Slowbow, spend your time up high in the areas mentioned, and look for clearcuts. That's where the big boys hang out. Good luck, I've hunted it twice with a bow and it was great. Make sure you scout and get used to seeing nice bucks. You don't want to waste you tag on a small one early on.

slowbow,
Congrats on an awesome tag!!
I archery hunted the Paunsaugunt in 2003 and loved every minute of it. That has to be one of the prettiest places to hunt in the world. You have received some great advice from others already and it is all spot on with my experiences. I killed a nice 28" 4x4 south of Tropic reservoir in a clear cut area. As Dub already mentioned, find clear cuts and keep an eye on them because the deer seemed to love to feed in them. I missed a HUGE buck the day before I killed mine in another clear cut as well, but I am still having a hard time dealing with that miss!

The best advice I can give you to get the most up to date info on the unit is to contact the biologist, Adam Bronson. His contact info is on the DWR site. He was very helpful and gave me some great advice and starting points to scout. Get down there as many times as you can during the summer and you will do well.

Let us know how your hunt turns out!
