what would be a good choice for next yr on colo. MD? I have 2 bp's is that enough for a decent tag or should I wait? thx for the help

Mangoman,
From my research, you may want to consider the eastern plains units. The reason they sometimes don't require lots of points is that it is all private land and the use of a dependable outfitter is usually the case for access. The bucks are big, even if the density of deer is somewhat low. It will take more money than a DYI hunt. Every March or so the "Colorado Outdoors" magazine publishs the points needed for each unit its not bad info for around $11.00 a year, or you can sift through it at CO Div. Of Wildlife web site (a huge pdf file). Bottom line is there are going to be decent bucks taken in lots of units and some of them are going to be sleeper areas. Being willing to get away from roads, and into tough country with potential may be worth a point or two! Hang in there.

Depends on how you want to approach the next 5-10 years of your hunting life. I would recommend coming to grips with the fact that the top 5 units will take you a long time to draw. There are a lot of second tier units that produce dandy's every year. Maybe put in for a point first and then a decent unit second. You can further increase your odds by finding a ranch that offers access with a trespass fee and then apply for a private land only tag. I second the colorado outdoors magazine tip. well worth the 11.00 a year.

Remeber, 80 % of hunting is getting out there. You can't shoot a good buck sitting at home on your preference points. This year would be a prime year to get a leftover tag and get out there. With a relatively mild winter and a wet spring, horn growth might be phenomenal. If you hold on to points too long, you run the risk of a massive winter kill and the game starts all over. conditions are getting pretty good, but one bad winter can send all of us back to ground zero.

Good luck..

There are always big deer in the wilderness areas. Many don't take that many points. Check the San Juan NF units.
