LAST EDITED ON Oct-25-11 AT 12:32PM (MST)[p]I have felt like crap for about 3 weeks now, well a week ago I was driving in town and felt short of breath and tightening of the chest. I pulled off the road thinking it would just go away, it didn't and got worse and worse until I felt like I was gasping for air so I called 911 and went for an ambulance ride to the ER..

At the ER they gave me oxygen and ran tests and x rays, nothing wrong on the x rays and blood work confirmed I was not having a heart attack (I'm 35) So they release me... The EKG did however raise some concern so they advised that I should have a heart stress test done (after they release me)to make sure all is good...

The next few days I was worried something was wrong with my heart.. I got sick of worrying so I went camping for the weekend (this last weekend) to clear my head and relax.. Well on the way home I get a text from a guy I met during a previous backpacking trip in Sept, it says...

"Hey Jason, just wondering if you and your brother got sick after eating that bear we killed, me and &^%&* did Doc thinks we have worms takes 4-6 weeks to start feeling bad"

DING!.. Light goes on..

Rewind to Sept 18th... Me and my bro backpacked into the high country where we met 2 guys that had killed a bear, we joined them at their camp for dinner where we had bear ribs and backstraps.. And looking back some of it was undercooked..

So I called him up and he asked me my symptoms (muscle fatigue, shortness of breath)and they are the same.. Now I figure I better get a hold of my bro since I have not heard from him in a while.. he probably has them too..Turns out he has been sick for 3 weeks with the same symptoms..

They can enter your central nervous system and cause respiratory paralysis ... This is what was happening to me...Scary

Sorry for the long post I'll shorten it up... All 4 of us got sick from the meat.. When the blood work comes back it will confirm that we all have Trichinosis which is very rare, only 12-20 cases in the USA a year..

If this sshit don't kill me I'm thinking of opening a bait shop... Think I'll call it "I GOT WORMS".....lol

up anyway."

You left out the best part of the story.....where your high altitude friends whip out the apple pie in a bottle and everyone gets shotty on vodka. One thing leads to another at which point you find yourself eating bear sushi after someone raised the alarms...I don't think we ought to be eating this bloody mess....only to be countered with...ah what's the worst that could happen.

Good that you are ok...hey, you could save some of them for spring time and go fishing.

Compromise, hell! ... If freedom is right and tyranny is wrong, why should those who believe in freedom treat it as if it were a roll of bologna to be bartered a slice at a time?

Good luck on the cure there BS and speedy recovery.

I feel like that sometimes...trying to think back to when i last had raw Bear ribs cooked on the rocks. :)

Dang! I remember trichinosis from a medical microbiology class back in undergrad. That is a nasty little parasite. I remember Prof. Harrington specifically talking about bear meat. Hope you recover quick if you end up being diagnosed!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-25-11 AT 04:16PM (MST)[p]I remember your post and pics you put up a while back and dug it back up :)

"We met a couple guys in there that packed in 2 days after we had been there.. I was worried that they were gonna hunt our area but they said they planned on it but since we were there they would give us space and hunt a different basin.. We herd them shoot one late morning and a few hours later they came back to camp with a bear...

That night they came and invited us over for Bear ribs and backstraps.. There was no grill so we cooked them on flat granite rocks...It worked fine and tasted great.."

Some bad stuff there. Seriously, glad to hear you found the problem and can focus on getting better! Don't think I personally will be doing any "cooking" on rocks in the near future.

...making me glad that I gave all of my bear meat to my friend's pack of german shorthairs...

Hope you get well soon--that sounds nasty.

Sorry Shnort, sounds like to me you most likely caught the clap from some cougar at the bar. But... if the o'le lady is buying your BS story.. good for you.

Have you heard how they are going to treat it yet?

Do you have to eat pills wrapped in raw burger like my dog does?

If you can catch them alive, you can sell them to supermodels on line...all joking aside, glad you found the cause. I bet that was a tense few days for ya.

I've seen one Trichanosis case in my career and it was from bear meat. This guy was hospitalized for a week. Glad you're feeling better Buck!

It's always an adventure!!!

Ok ...I'm slow, but which one of you blew my reply up?

The advice to not eat bear when beaver is an option on the table was legit!

I talk to 5 Md's this evening and 4 of the 5 said they recomended beaver over bear!

That's a wild story snort!! Glad all is well!

Well played Tageater! I guess beaver fever is better than Trick:)

Thanks guys, I hope the meds kill these bastards off.. Yesterday was a tough one, my muscles went from just an annoying feeling to aching.. Also had trouble breathing last night and was kinda scared to go to sleep.. The meds are no fun either, they give an upset stomach and make my head feel weird for a couple hours after I take them... Too weak to do much of anything, if these worms don't kill me I'm afraid the boredom will...lol

Bear is fine to eat. It either needs to be cooked all way through or frozen for a certain period of time. There is a table on the internet for freezing it. It will show the length of time and the temperature needed.

I have eaten plenty of bear, but, it is cooked all the way through (chili, etc..)

Wild pig also has the potential to give you Trichinosis. It also needs to be cooked all the way through or frozen for the recommended amount of time.

For me it must be cooked period.

tageater, thats some good advice...lol

BS! That's scary. I just got some packages of bear meat from a friend who killed one a couple weeks ago. I've never killed one, never had a desire to.

I think I'll keep it in the freezer for a few years and then cook the hell out of it before I eat it.

I haven't eaten bear meat in 20 years.

I hope you get better real soon! Thanks for the heads up, you may have saved my life! Seriously, because I forgot you're supposed to cook it well done.

Reason #2 why I wont touch the #####.

Snort, that is some nasty shyt man! Hope you feel better soon and uh... next time you eat bear, DON'T!

Piper, how's your period?

Crazy story. Hope you feel better. What is the name of the medication?

Montana has a free service where you can get you bear meat tested. I tested mine and the whole process was pretty easy.

As mentioned before make sure to freeze first and then cook through.

Albenza is what they prescribed all 4 of us... We will take it for a month...

Snort, Glad to hear you figured it out and are on the road to recovery. No fun when your not feeling good...and don't know why.

Might want to invest in an instant-read meat thermometer. Magic number is 165! I roast it to 180 to play it safe.

In the meantime, we'll do our best to keep you entertained.

Thank y'all for the well wishes and the laughs... Figured I'd give an update on my condition... I'm feeling much better real close to 100%.. Only time I notice anything is when I'm doing something physical.. Last few days I have been splitting (with a sledge hammer and wedges)and stacking wood.. I get pretty wore out after about an hour of that but it's hard work to begin with..

I will never eat Bear again.. I know most of you who already do will continue to do so.. Best advice I can give you is that if you feel any discomfort at all after eating a possible carrier of Trichinosis seek medical attn. asap... The parasites start off in you're GI tract and are much easier to kill off before they get into you're blood/muscles/organs... The bad thing is not everyone (like me)shows the symptoms until they are in you're blood stream and muscles.. Being week and having swelling around your eyes is a tell tell symptom of the parasite... This happened to me but I had no idea what was going on, just figured it was some kind of flu..

Anyway, I'm doing good and the urge to drag my asss across the carpet is subsiding...

Snort:

I am glad to hear you are feeling better. Years ago, I remember a young kid (high school I think), drowned in a local resevoir. Later it was found that the cause may have been from some raw bear he ate. I guess he just gave out while he was swimming. Not sure if it was true, but thats what a cousin of his told me.

I shot a bear a few years ago. Opened that thing up and it was crawling with worms. Not saying the meat cannot be good, or safe propery prepared, but I don't think I will bea eating it anytime soon..

>When I was a kid our
>next door neighbor died after
>getting Trichinosis from eating bear
>meat.

Thanks for the uplifting words of encouragement....lol

"Being week and having swelling around your eyes is a tell tell symptom of the parasite..."

It's also a symptom that I've been fighting with the wife.:)
