Deer sized game out to 300 yards....what's your favorite bullet? My Mark V likes RL19 with 115 gr Ballistic Tips, 117 gr GameKings and 115 gr Berger VLD's. I've heard some stories of these type of bullets not penetrating or blowing up when hitting bone. I prefer shoulder/double lung shots. 120 grain Partitions don't fly very good for some reason.

Any suggestions? The 117 gr SST I think could also be an option.

I've heard of the Hammer bullets, seem like a custom TTSX if sorts being all copper. 92 grains seems a little light? Or with a copper bullet, do you want to go lighter?

You know i forgot all about the Accubond. I only shot 1 group with them. I was amazed at how well the BT and Bergers shot that I didn't try any more loads with them. They fly well out of the 7mm mag and 35 Whelen so maybe I'll try to work up a load.

All copper bullets tend to be lighter because copper is not as heavy as lead. If they built them to the traditional weights, they end up being too long.

Yes on Hammers.

Yes you do shot a little lighter class bullet, but WILL drive them faster.

They are very easy to load for, not sensitive to seating depth. Most report extremely good accuracy, performance on game has been very good.

They are a bit higher cost, but for a hunting bullet worth it for sure.

for a fast round like the 257, most lead bullets are going to splatter to some degree, many that you listed will all but disintegrate if any bones are hit. Still likely kill just fine, but you will have a lot of lead spread out in the carcass.

This is really why the Hammers were made.

Thanks, I'll give the guys a call and discuss with them. I was actually suprised to see they make a 128 gr 257 bullet. Would love to see how those would shoot but I'm assuming 1:10 twist would be too slow.

115 Nosler , wound up ! Cleaned a nice buck out from one end out his tail end. I was really impressed when I gutted him ..... soup !!!

Stillwater165, Was your shot, the same as Tristate disclaims as a Texas: "Heart Shot".... Luv Yah Tristate but had to toss you Under the Buss to complete the Post to Stillwater165.

Stillwater165, we all have experienced Soup. Glad you got the Buck and Proud you have a 257 Weatherby... I always desired one.

Jagerdad :)

Utah400elk.....what's your experience with the lethality of the Barnes? I'm afraid the Ballistic Tips and Berger though shooting sub MOA, may not be ideal due to the tendency to blow up on bone. I've read ALOT of posts on various websites and other than the Partition, people seem to love the Barnes TTSX for this particular cartridge. I really want something that performs well up close if opportunity presents itself and am limiting myself to 300-350 yards for most likely deer and antelope. My 300 Weather with the 165 grain Partition will work fine on bugger game though I still don't expect to try and shoot farther than the 400 yard mark.

115 Barnes have been great for me. One shot kill on a 344 Wyoming elk and has killed numerous deer and antelope. They are sub MOA and a max load of IMR 7828, I am getting a little over 3400 FPS. I average 1/2 MOA for a five shoot group from the bench (if I do my part). Best of luck.

I believe the Texas heart shot starts from the ?rear end? , my bullet ended somewhere in there ! Either way the 257 Roy is fun gun !

Thanks Mt.Muley. Talked to Steve for about a half hour today. Heck of a salesmen but he seemed sincere so I'm ordering a box of the 98 grain Sledgehammers. He said he wouldn't think twice of hitting an Elk with one or anything with 4 legs for that matter. Anxious to try them. I will update with my results as far as accuracy goes. Don't have much to test effectiveness until Fall.
