Your Garden ?

I only planted a few carrots, tomatoes, and some herbs this year. We got hard frosts last Thur, Fri, and Sat mornings last week. Even covered, the tomatoes took some damage.

We found out a few years ago that the hippie chicks who grow the best marijuana in the world also grow the best vegetable gardens, so we gave up and visit the local farmer's market every week in the summer. I don't let my wife buy the brownies.

Hippie chicks.....ahhhhhh. the memories....

Back in the 70s I was based in the central valley. The hippie chicks in 'Frisco weren't as friendly. So, I concentrated on those inland.

I spent a lot of time cruising the road to Yosemite. One time I happened to take a side road and decided to make a short hike along the creek. I was actually looking for a fishing hole. Anyway, I happened to see some hippie chicks skinny dipping and drinking wine.

I didn't want to intrude, but, thanks to binoculars, I could see they were drinking Mateus Rose.

Sooooo, I went to the liquor store on base and bought two bottles, then showed up early. To skinny dip. I set the bottles up so they would see them on their way in.

Things worked out rather well.

Once your tomato plant gets pretty loaded with tomatoes, start pinching off any new shoots. It forces the plant to put energy into the tomatoes already there. Also use a fertilizer heavier in potassium. It promotes fruit growth more. Try to keep night time temps above 60 degrees. Also let your plants get good and dry between waterings. Make it think it's running out of time. Even if it wilts a little between watering. Above all, don't over water. It's called tough love. :)

If that doesn't work.....fried green tomatoes. :D

Yes, I've heard that about blossom drop. Some kind of greenhouse would help. Back in the day I had a 55 gallon barrel of water painted black. It would heat up during the day and put out just enough heat at night to keep the temperature in the greenhouse about 10 degrees higher than outside. The greenhouse was about 6X8 and just for tomatoes.

This would definitely cure the temp swings. But hothouse tomatoes taste different I swear. Probably in my head...

PC, yes Miracle Grow is great! They make one specifically for tomatoes. A little less nitrogen and more potassium. Also you might try a different variety of tomato that ripens earlier. Usually on the label it gives you the number of days until harvest.

You can't beat outdoor full sun tomatoes, but here in the fog, some sort of greenhouse is a must.

Here's my garden boxes.

Here's my lot 12 years ago and then right after I moved in, the garden boxes were the first thing to go in and we had a garden that first summer. There was a wash that ran right through there which created a low spot and a lot of gravel for good drainage.

You got that right.
You can find me in the mule deer and elk sections.

Hang on ridgetops It is not so bad.

Folks,( Including Homer, ridgetops + everyone ) I apologize for an obfuscated post. I sure felt Homer would grasp my hints. So here is my clarifications. I grew up picking and eating RAW Almonds. I never bought a single Almond from a store until my Wife did so this year to help my diet. I was trained by Almond Growers of time long gone, on how to pick Almonds that did not have a WOOD Flavor.
I agree with Mr. Anderson that Raw should be spelled as RAW... "Not Previously messed with via Governmental rules on oversight safety".

All of us on this Campfire enjoy foods WE Harvested and Not paid for in a supermarket wrapped in Plastic. I am Not Anti Government. I am a Pro-Education, Science and, Knowledge. I just do not express it properly on many posts on this forum. My Bad. I'll always take the arrows and blame. I can't even encourage my Wife of 41 years (In a couple days) to study heat as its applied to food or, a cookbook. Many of you are fantastic and have EXPERIENCE in various realms. But this is about Gardening and Food for our Families & The enjoyments of WORKING at getting better.
I made a Gardening Post and it was changed to Pot and now Almonds. My Humor is Law Enforcement + Science Blunt. Either one picks up on my hint or they are strained.Almonds should taste like Almonds YOU Picked. One day in a far new Orchard my kids Picked Almonds. The Farmers Wife (Age 70+) taught my Daughters in her Kitchen to Wash the Nuts in a Vinegar bath. I had never seen this done.
Just consider my efforts in the following links to read, learn and obtain your own opinion. Please, when possible, include your Wife and Daughters in the following. Women have inspirations to learn and succeed for the betterment of mankind.

Now, Read how I grew up around Almonds via this Man's website.

I hope you enjoyed and felt Mr. Anderson is worth buying Almonds from. This last sentence could make commercial Almond grower land owners MAD. I simply spent my life learning and feeding my Family things I/We killed, Caught (Fish) and Fruits, Vegetables Etc..... with zero cares of any kind. I know over thinking and over education can interfere. I go Basic. I applaud those of you who posted above. Eel, your are near Eureka California. Did you know Ronald Wilson Reagan studied Economics in the same College I also went to...? (Not same Decade).

I also Love Bat's and in/on Mr. Anderson's web page there is this (of you studied...Breeze readers never study) the link: https://www.theguardian.com/sustain...n-to-us-agriculture-research-california-texas

Studding and not studding is fine. Field Experience is always; THE BEST. I Gave Homer the EXPERIENCE door to open and say why some Almonds Taste like Cardboard or Wood. Sadly, it seems most if not all of us have lost the care or ability to Taste what our Fore Fathers brought to their Family Tables. Sorry if this comes across and ruffles feeling of, encourages some to fire various shots of negativity at me. Maybe I need Has-Bear to chime in..?

Jagardad :)

My mom and dad went to Hilmar High. My grandparents had a dairy between Hilmar and Turlock and I have aunts and uncles and cousins who lived there. My daughter lives there now.I lived there for a year. Blue Diamond has a plant in Turlock. I've eaten thousands of pounds of Blue Diamond almonds, or it feels like it. Christmas, birthdays, father's day, President's Day.....etc.
