Diesel pick up's ?

OK I have a serious question for diesel pick up drivers not the big rigs. Why do you leave your trucks running all the time? I mean at gas stations, convince stores, out in front of peoples houses when you go inside for awhile. I even seen one 50 yards out in a grocery stores parking lot running nobody around. In the Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, it don't matter. Is their a mechanical reason? Is it better for the starter? saves gas? I get it if somebody is in them for the heater, or air conditioning, but most of the time nobody is around. Educate me why do you leave them running? :D

Some guys have turbo timers on their trucks, basically lets the truck idle for a preset amount of time after shutting it off, prevents super hot oil from just sitting in the turbos.

I let mine idle for about 5 -7 minutes only if it has been a very hot day or I have been pulling a heavy load or both.

It helps to ensure cooler oil is fully circulated.

I dont leave it running unattended out in public for any reason. Diesel stacking can result if it is left at idle for too long.

Exhaust temperature gauges help a lot.

I see this all the time. Guys driving slow then when somebody comes up behind them boom the black cloud. Or when they are first in line at a red light they punch it through the intersection boom the black cloud.

What he said. The part of love is when they leave a vehicle running and unlocked. Then they are shocked when it's gone as they return to the parking lot with slurpee in hand.

After driving a diesel for a bit a instant shutdown isnt good. The oil becomes hot and if you shut down it will create hot spots in your turbo. Better to cool down to 400 degrees on your egts so you dont create hot spots with the oil. The oil is used from your main oil to lubricate the bearings on the turbo. Besides just running in and out somehwere i leave any vehicle running. Any longer than a few minutes i shut it down.

I love the guys who leave for work at 4:30 am so they start it up at 4:15 am to "warm it up" and wake up the whole neighborhood, including a half dozen dogs that start barking.

PM me your address. I'll make it better.

I already did, but thanks for the offer. He now drives a gas rig and his dogs are deathly quiet.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-03-19 AT 10:10PM (MST)[p]an instant shut off of a turbo diesel pickup not pulling 10k lbs to the top of a steep grade will hurt nothing.....
