Is Helping Actually Helping?

Websites and forums like MM have been tremendous founts of knowledge and resources for learning. I have made great friends and had awesome hunting experiences which were directly related and created on this Website. There are a few forums I follow that have lead to great information sharing and even a few successful hunts.

I have handed over my fair share of information regarding hunts, dates, laws, verbiage and everything else hunting related when people have petitioned for help. Most of us have posted a time or two asking for help on an LE hunt or looking for general access points etc. so I have compassion for those seeking help. What chaps my crack, though, is when a first time poster comes on asking for help but appears to feel entitled to the information he is requesting. More than once these types of posts have gone unanswered or the first couple of replies are "boots on the ground", "get a map" etc etc. The OP then comes back on with a sarcastic reply and is pissed off that he didn't get the answers he was looking for. Their response is how I justify my claim that they feel entitled to answers.

The best hunting spots I have in my hunting bank were earned. I have been taken on hunts and have been semi-guided, if you will, by friends or a family member but those are normally short-lived hunts and not a year-after-year situation.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of talking by phone with a fellow from the Midwest about a NR Wyoming hunt. This guy reached out to me and explained what some of his obstacles to scouting were and we ended up talking on the phone. I wish I could have given him more information and if I could join him on his hunt, I would. These types of connections have been fantastic and also create a network of hunters all across the united states.

So, this begs the question... Are we really helping these one-and-done posters that come on with an entitled attitude when we give them information? Would a guy be better off getting no information and hitting the mountain completely unaware and uninformed? Are we really just withholding information because we are selfish and want the animals for ourselves or do we do it because we know the value of hitting the ground running and learning everything from scratch?

If I have come off sounding self-righteous or a hypocrite then my articulation skills are to blame as I have been the recipient of info but also the deliverer.

Well Travis!

You Know one of These Days it's gonna Happen!

Well Maybe it'll Happen!:D

You Boys are gonna see Me Post:

I've been a Long Long Long Time Lurker!

Figured I'd Finally Join!

After 3 Decades I Finally Drew an LE Tag!

I Was Just Wondering If anybody Could Give Me Directions to the Nearest Town and Directions on how to get there?

(((Since I've Never been there before!:D)))

All GPS Locations of Water would be Nice!

I Won't Have 5 Minutes to Scout the Unit!

All Hot/RUT Spots I'd surely want You to Share With Me!

I Can't Take even one day off of Work to Scout!

In Fact I can Only Take 2-3 Days off for the Hunt!

So ALL Honey Hole Locations Will be Mandatory!

It'll Be the Only Way I Take a Trophy and I Don't wanna Screw it up!

Oh,And Thanks in advance!:D:D:D

Travis... I entered MM'Y for the wrong reasons and I am Paying the price. I'll take the arrows to my chest. But YOU Joined for some other driving desire.I do understand Elk (and Many Others) but I seem to always get to know the person posting. I enjoy making friends and being kind. "NO" I would not give away my Spots (even if I can no longer walk to them) unless I got closer to THE MAN (Kid) asking. My Generation is near gone and those long before me, were so much better.

My words are often scrambled. I got chewed out recently (MM'y Admin) so I am trying to be less funny and On Topic.

Travis, people are always going to be frustrating until you get to understand each one Personally. Travis, Just be yourself. By the way, check your email... I (WE) Really need your help. If You have Elks email address, it is fine with me if you share my email with him.

I highly enjoy your Post above Travis.

Hugs
Jagerdad

Travis, got any good spots? Seriously, I'll never hunt Utah. You draw something in Montana, give me a shout. mtmuley

I think your making this a little too complicated.
I don't care how many post a person has, I'll help them anyways.
It does make me a little sad when they don't report back to me after the season is over. Over half of them will never get back with me with a post season report, even when I ask them to do so.

A person should either help or don't help. Beyond that, no other comment is necessary. Just my opinion.

Elkassassin, I'll keep an eye open for a camping spot. :D

I help when I can...I also like to get a "this is how my hunt went" pm or email. Just recently sent an email to a guy who asked for help...he never confirmed receipt of the email. I texted him to find out if he received it...no response. Oh well. It happens...

Steve

Cancer doesn't discriminate...don't take your good health for granted because it can be gone in a heartbeat. Please go back and read the last line. This time really understand what it says.

I was pm'd and an out of state guy ask for info about archery Deer on Dutton. I spend alot of time there, and have been looking this year, as I have a rifle tag. I told him about a couple Deer Iv seen this year, @nd a couple spots to look into. I can no longer hunt alot of my old spots, because my knees and health are not what they were. My son that loved hiking and hunting " the rock" with me, has been an Idaho resident for 3 years now. So I enjoy sharing info when I can, and hope to hear back if its helpful. If not thats ok to. Oh and btw, ill be holding my cards tight about "the one" to wrap my tag on, when I find him.
