Thanks Eel. I bought some Miracle Grow for tomatoes. Loaded with potassium. I have big, red, tasty, tomatoes coming out of my ears. Making "warm" salsa today. PC

That's great PC! Even in ideal conditions our tomatoes up north don't ripen until mid August. You're a month ahead of us.

Follow the label directions on the Miracle Grow, and don't over water.

Dear Paul, 1990'z+ I had a close friend who was an Agronomist. One day at my Home he saw a box of Miracle Grow (Dried and colored crystals). He pointed to it saying "Miracle Grow is the worst economic ripoff ever fabricated for Consumers".

He was 100% Correct.

See: https://thegardeningcook.com/home-made-miracle-grow/
Home made Miracle Grow =

1 gallon of water
1 tbsp epsom salt
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp of Household ammonia
Mix all the ingredients together and use once a month on your plants by mixing a 1/8 -1/4 of the concentrate with 4 cups of water in a watering can.

Where is Haz-Bean ????

Jagerdad :)

By Dah Wey, I saw a Pint of "Worm Juice" @ $$$$$ and I started a Worm Farm in an Old Cast Iron Bathtub. Oh, it is the best since sliced bread. They consumed everything from my wife vacuum bag of
stuff to cardboard to Crap; Anything. I simply would uncover the top, add water and out of the drain I had super concentrated Worm Juice. I had to dilute it and it did everything in growing. I never spent any $ after the online order from the worm factory.
I even got HUG'S from Every Worm. Imagine that and, each Worm wanted me to have a Honda Trail 90 to take it on a ride. :-(

Paul, if you have an old lawn mower motor you can build your own Honda trail 90 and save some money too.

Stick with Miracle Gro for Tomatoes

Ingredients: Guaranteed Analysis: Total Nitrogen (N) (18%), Ammoniacal Nitrogen (1.4%), Urea Nitrogen (14.0%), Nitrate Nitrogen (2.6%), Available Phosphate (P2O5) (18%), Soluble Potash (K2O) (21%), Magnesium (Mg) (0.050%), Water Soluble Magnesium (Mg) (0.50%), Copper (Cu) (0.05%), Water Soluble Copper (Cu) (0.05%),

Jag is correct that you could buy a lifetime supply of N, P K, plus micronutrients for the same guaranteed analysis from a farm fertlizer shop for about the same price as a box of miracle grow.

I'd stay away from his home brew for number of reasons. Ammonium does contain N but it would have to go through a soil nitrification process to be useful (plants utilize nitrate nitrogen) It could burn leaves if you poured it on plants. Plus, the epsom salts contain enough salts to be problematic if your soil doesn't drain well. JoeBob says don't do it.

John Rock, sometimes you worry me. lol

Anyway, a week after application I started getting a $hitload of tomatoes. I'll just stick with MJ.

BTW, John my wife said you called. Question?

Thanks Fred/Eel. Oh, you too John. pc

Good advise Hasbean. I took two semesters of organic gardening at our Community College and learned a lot. Starting with soil PH on through harvest. We learned about clay and sandy soils and how to correct them. Adding compost, making compost, blah blah blah....lol

I've actually tried the ammonia, Epson salt formula. I can't say it hurt the tomatoes, but I can say I didn't notice that it helped. All my tomatoes were grown in pots so I felt the need to add some type of fertilizer. My main garden was just rich organic compost.

Eel, You are a magnificent Man. I shall not use a Play on words via quotes followed by a negative. All I am denoting is that Eel is a man whom has experiences plus an uncanny way with Humor.

I sure know where you live Eel and, with the good, comes the bad. The bad in this matter is a lack of Sun. I have endless Sun and I learned long ago that a Pot heats up and it sends the heat into the Roots of any item growing. So, for my location, I now, do nothing at all. I lost my self motivation. You know that Eel. Nuff on that.

Eel, you are in the Golden Triangle + you run into gal'z. So get some of their Pot (Marijuana) growing junk lights and put em to use. Growing Peppers is harder. Asparagus may be outside of your growing interests.

Bean is 100% Correct. Eel, the Land you live on has enough nutrients to grow anything. It takes a lifetime to learn what Has-Bean knows and yet, there shall be Professors whom challenge Has-Bean.

If Paul is delighted with Miracle Grow, that = a Happy Man.

We all have challenges. I am happy we have a Your Garden #2 Post.

Pictures anyone :)

Those are actually hybrids - "big zac ". I grow about a dozen varieties each year (8x12); 2 are hybrids and the rest heirlooms.

We used to have a big garden but we finally gave in to the deer. Our last year outdoors we had 54 tomato plants and not a single tomato! No mas.

The characteristics of a tomato (taste and texture) are determined by variety IMO. Assuming of course the plants are well fed and properly cared for. I will put my "greenhouse " tomatoes up against any.:)

We had a flippin Chinese dope syndicate taken down last year here in Cortez. Thousands of plants and a couple of property seizures. Sheesh...

Dood......just read that link. The list of crimes is pretty amazing. Do you guys have to get a permit to take a crap in the woods? I would have thought legalization would have reduced the illegal grows.

Wow, all those great tomatoes....I see myself bringing over about 50 pounds of thick cut bacon....lol

When California legalized weed they included permits and regulation so they could collect taxes. That gave them the right and incentive to bust nonpermitted grows. California wants their cut.

The listed crimes and fines are a joke though. They are not enforced. One place has been raided 5 times since the law passed. The same land owner.

We have a lot of beet curly top disease in my end of the Grand Valley. That really limits what tomatoes I can grow to cherry , which are naturally resistant, and a couple of others which are determinate and only 50% resistant. It curtails my tomato crop.

I think they grow good here because I'm closer to the pinto bean capital of the world.:)

Here's one from last year. This is every few days when the first wave of fruit starts ripening. Ventilation is key in a greenhouse and finding varieties that like heat. I put in a solar attic fan this year and its working out - have not seen temps in the 100's yet this year (ambient mid 80's). Those yeller ones are outstanding.

Bluehair, beautiful! Do you grow Brandywine? That's one of my favorite for BLT....They're $3.50/lb. at our Farmer's Market. Two tomatoes costs about $7.00. I don't share...lol

I think yellow Maters are low-acid compared to their red counterparts. My Dad had ulcers and acid reflex but he was ok with yellow Maters

Ahem....pinto bean capitol of the world...in terms of production it ranks about 13th county wise in Colorado. It's a self proclaimed title. My handle is BeanMan because I spent 33 years working with pinto beans, running the Foundation Seed Program for dry beans, increasing all of the CSU bean breeding programs new crosses etc.

Hasbean,
I've been plagued with curly top virus here in Utah as well. This year I tried several new varieties of heirloom and had my Dester tomato plants not succumb to the virus. My Jetstar and cherry tomatoes were the only others that survived.
It's the first year growing the Dester and it's one of the best tomatoes I've ever grown for flavor. I'll be growing it again next year. I'm hopeful it may have some resistance to ctv.

>Tomatoes or pomegranates?

Tomatoes..Getting about 3 - 4 lbs a day now.

Thats lotsa salsa especially if you grew the chilies. You must give a lot away unless you figured out a way to store it?

I got busy down in AZ this summer but now I have time to get back to golfing, gardening, and goofing around which are some other things old guys should be doing. Lots of bigger ones left out there so have fun. :)
