I was on active duty about that time. Not too surprising his superiors didnt do anything....publicly.

But, in today's world I am certain someone would hang him up within the rules, even though he did the right thing.

You?re right. The lawyer liability name of the game today in any large, especially governmental, organization is; look like you're doing something, have the liability mitigation if the organization at heart, and never ever allow a maverick to make a decision that some never-has-been wrote into policy. If it ain?t in the book you'd best not so it. They know that it will never cover every possible contingency....and they don't care. The human element of common sense on the fly problem solving has by every design, been eliminated.
