How to get rid of stray cats?....

I hope Bessy doesn't get ticked about this topic, but...

My girlfriend and I have a sweet setup in the backyard. Half of the backyard is fine sand with a firepit and tiki torches. It's great for chillin with a few beers. Yesterday, I came home and saw a bunch of little paw prints all around the sand......None of our neighbors have cats, so I know it's not their cats.

Being that I hate cats, I thought of just sitting out there with my bow, practicing my trapping skills, anitfreeze, etc....

By the way, I have a videocamera, so if you guys think of something good I should be able to post a video...i.e. triggered catapault comes to mind...

So, how to get rid of cats?...

Go to the local animal control and get a trap. Simple and legal. Just don't tell them you chocked the shi t out of it upon release. LOL.

I have a similar problem. I just went to ifa and got a live trap and catch one once a week or so. Animal control here is full enough they won't take more than one a week. The cats I am catching are wild. Try to pick one up without some thick leather gloves and they'll bite the chit out of you. Anyway's good luck. I would refrain from abusing the cat's. You don't want to end up on the evening news.

Do NOT use any kind of poison as this can cause serious problems if you plan on eating them. unless you are taking head shots, large calibers are not advised for obvious waste-of-meat reasons.

economy is tough, you may as well save some money on the food bill. here's a recipe i highly recommend

braiseddish.jpg

1 cat cut in serving-sized pieces dusted in flour with salt and pepper
1/4 c. extra virgin olive oil
6 artichokes
2 1/4" thick slices of slab bacon, diced
1 small sweet onion, diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 carrot, diced
1 lemon
3 small tomatoes, peeled, seeded, and diced
1/2 c. dry white wine
2-4 c. homemade chicken broth
garni of 4 flat parsley stems, 6 leafy thyme branches, 1 bay leaf tied up with kitchen twine Salt and pepper
1/4 c chopped flat-leaf parsley (optional)

Snap the leaves off the artichokes until only the tender inner leaves remain. Snap off the stem. Trim the remaining green bits from the bottom of the artichoke, and cut off the inner leaves in a bunch at the point where they are very tender. Pare the tough green outer layer off the remaining stem, pairing the stem into a point. Now cut the artichoke bottom into quarters and remove the choke with a sharp knife from each quarter. Rinse to remove any traces of foin ("hay") and drop them into a bowl of water acidulated with the juice of half a lemon.

Heat 2 T olive oil in a large heavy casserole or Dutch oven. Dredge the cat pieces in seasoned flour, shaking off excess. Brown over medium heat, turning regularly, until golden on all sides. Remove cat pieces to a plate and dump any oil remaining in the pan. Add 1 T of the remaining oil and the bacon dice. (Omit bacon if you only have access to the thin-sliced vacuum packed supermarket variety.) Saut? until cooked but not "crisp". Add the remaining T of oil and the onion and carrot. Saute for 5 minutes, then add the artichoke quarters and the garlic, stir one minute, and add the tomatoes and the white wine. Turn up the heat and reduce until syrupy, stirring constantly, for about 5 minutes. Lay the bouquet garni on top of the vegetables. Arrange the cat pieces on top, together with any juice accumulated in the plate.

Pour in enough broth to come halfway up the sides of the cat pieces. Cover and bring to a simmer. Continue to simmer over very low heat about 1 hour or cook in the oven at 350 degrees for the same amount of time. The cat should be just tender and part readily from the bone. Don't overcook or it will become dry. Check the liquid level frequently and add more broth if necessary. Turn the cat pieces once.

When done, remove the cat pieces to a warm platter and arrange the vegetables, removed with a slotted spoon, around them. Cover and keep warm. Strain the remaining pan juices into a smaller saucepan and reduce over high heat, skimming frequently, until reduced by 1/3. Pour over the platter and serve immediately. Sprinkle with finely chopped flat-leaf parsley if you like.

bonappetit!

2 OR 3 220 Conibear traps will work good, set up were they or entering your proprety

If you have dogs then don't use this method, but if you put this out at night and keep the dog inside and make sure to not to let the dog get near it, put a small bowl of Anti-freeze out and the cats will drink it and go somewhere else to expire.

Well, I'm with Feleno on this one, up to the eatin' part.

With the economy being what it is.....

Any outdoorsman who knows anything, will tell you that cat hide toughness, is like an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10.

They sell the hell out of rabbit hide, which is like a 2 on the 10 scale.

So my idea is to raise cats for fur production.

You get some cats, get some rats and some water and a big shed.

You feed the rats to the cats until the cats are old enough to skin.

You feed the cat parts back to the rats. Perfect cycle. No cat food. No rat food.

Sell the hides and bury the cat chit and rat chit and Wa la!, you are done!

Just a thought.

Interesting suggestions fellas...keep em coming...

..."steal his CAPS LOCK button" - my favorite so far....!!

My GF just emailed me, and looks like they were back again early this morning after I left for the gym at 3 a.m.....

Traps sound good; but like you guys have mentioned, I don't even want to try to handle those dirty p*ssies with their paw in a clamp.

Feleno, I'm not sure if we should be impressed or worried about you man.........

OK I have two observations.

1. Feleno - you are one sick dude. I prefer organic vegetable broth.

2. You are leaving your girlfriend at 3:00 am to got the gym? Where do you live? Maybe I can help.

Gotcha, so if I was to catch them in a cage, would you suggest taking them to a shelter?.....I'll have to check; but living in PHX, I doubt the shelters have too many vacancies...

If I was to let them go out in the desert...I'm just picturing opening the cage, and subsequently being chased all over by some nasty stray cat.....

.....and be sure to post up a good youtube vid of the slayings....you can get your teeth fixed for free while visiting the greybar hotel.

great post/pic, thanks for sharing

Ha NVB!!!!

Hey, when you come over, make sure you take a sip of the green Kool-Aid I'm leaving out for the cats...It tastes great!!!

.... oh yeah, and my girl has my 870 with 00 buck on her side of the bed....so kiss her on the neck first so she thinks it's me!!!!

BGb,

I've tasted the Prestone cocktail before and it really isn't that great. But thanks for the tip on the kiss on the neck. ;-)

Depending on where you live....

I used to get a live trap from the city for Racoons I was then supposed to call them to remove the racoon but for some reason I never caught them.

Now we lived on the foothills in Provo and with enaough room between neighbors that I would take the trap with the Racoon out to the woods around the house leave said racoon in trap, place barrel of ruger 10/22 in said trap and dispose of said racoon, spray off trap and repeat. I am sure this would work just as good for cats.

Once I catch a cat I just call animal control and they come pick it up and haul it off. They are pretty full and will only pick up one cat a week. For some reason they (the cats) just keep showing up.

Ask isaynunya - he has a unique way of doing it!

Seriously, you need to be very careful about how you handle this situation. Handling it the "western" way might get you in trouble with a capital T.

get a live trap, catch them and sell the cats to your local chinese buffet. with the economy the way it is making a few extra bucks is a good thing

Hmmmm, i'm thinking I might give them a fair chance and set a few traps in the yard. I have a few spare sets of guitar strings I can use..

I'll give that a few nights and see how it goes...

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but if you are in Nevada I would be very careful. Read this unbelievable statute that our ##### legislature enacted. Nevada statute (NRS 41.470) provides that:

1. Except as otherwise provided in subsection 4, if a natural person intentionally, willfully, recklessly or negligently injures or kills the pet of another natural person, the person is liable for the following:

(a) The cost of veterinary care incurred by the owner because of the injury or death of the pet.

(b) If the pet is injured, any reduction in the market value of the pet caused by the injury.

(c) If the pet is killed, the market value of the pet and reasonable burial expenses.

(d) Reasonable attorney?s fees and costs incurred by the owner in bringing an action pursuant to this section.

2. Punitive damages and noneconomic damages may not be awarded in an action brought under this section.

3. In an action brought under this section, the award of damages must not exceed $5,000 for each pet.

4. The provisions of this section do not authorize an award of damages pursuant to subsection 1 if:

(a) A nonprofit organization, society for the prevention of cruelty to animals established pursuant to NRS 574.010 or governmental entity, or an employee or agent thereof, injures or kills a pet while acting in furtherance of public health or animal welfare.

(b) The action is based on the killing of a dog that had been or was killing or causing damage to livestock.

(c) The person reasonably believed that:

(1) The pet presented a risk to his safety or to the safety of another person; and

(2) The action was necessary to protect himself or another person.

Just open your door and let them live in your house, thats what the crazy lady who lives down the street from me does.

Grind him up. Ground up tom cat works well for fox/racoon bait. Grind him up using sludge hammer!! Place cat in quart bottle, place the quart bottle in sunny place let cure for at least a week. To test it get a gas mask the type with nose plugs. Open quart bottle and place under car seat of boss / ex wife / mother inlaw or son-in-law who left fish in your tent last year. If bait is good they usually puke when they find it. If not leave it in the sun a couple more days.

Paintball gun solved my cat problem just sat out on the deck and as they would come in I would give them a fresh coat now they got way out of their way to stay out of my yard.
Good Luck and Great Memories

I'd sit on the back porch with my bow and staple 'em to the lawn. Quick, quiet, deadly. Toss 'em in the garbage. Don't tell nobody.

My shotgun has worked great around my house! And once in a while i pull out my 300 win mag to make sure its still on. I even give them a sporting chance by letting them out of the live trap and let them run like hell. Of course they usually dont make it very far.

P.S. I dont recommend this in city limits but it works great around the farm.

I kinda feel bad for city folks, out here we just take care of bizz and move on.

sorry BCB, this one had to go, messed up a good trail set i had out for fox!

So, I decided to be nice for a couple nights, so I set a few traps last night, and baited with some old sausage bisquit sandwiches......

traps and bait are still rigged, no paw prints yet.....we'll see when I get home from work today...

Ok, so if I catch a big yellow lab taking a crap on my lawn, can I blow a 90 grain ballistic tip through his miserable hide?

I have a great cat.
A big red tabhby and I live out in the hills.
He don't go on anyone's property but mine.
I find some cheesedickk trying to kill him and It is gonna get ugly.
I mean real ******* ugly.
Hope you badasses can explain to the 10 year old girl that you took great pride in torturing and killing her friend.
Weak, real ******* weak.

we live out on the edge of town. Our neighbors have a cat that keeps crapping in the wifes flower beds (7-8 times at least). i talk to the neighbors who own the cat, good people. i asked them twice to keep the cat out of our yard, which by the way is the law here. i told em I'm going to set a live trap and if i catch it they'll get a call from the local shelter. a week later i caught the cat, neighbors got a call from the shelter, they paid $25 to get it out. next time its $100. been a good deterent thusfar but if it turns out the neighbors are made of money I can feel good knowing they were warned.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-04-09 AT 09:16AM (MST)[p]If your intent was to catch someones pet the answer is YES.

I got no problem with trapping.
I've done my share and admire those that do it well.
It is the dumbf8cks that get off on driving around neighborhoods killing pets that piss me off.
People are irresponsible with their animals and should pay consequences, but there are those that get off on killing domestic cats for sport and that's bullschitt.
HH

Relax Harry, If you are being a responsible pet owner and keeping your pets on your own property, you have nothing to worry about. If you are not however, you could be opening yourself up for some heartache. Its real simple. You decide.

Whoa whoa whoa Harry, easy there partner. Did you read any of my posts?
As I wrote before, these cats are coming in my backyard, and I know for a fact that nobody within my general area has any cats. Plus, I saw one of them the other night, and it had no collar and definitely was not the lapcat you have.
Further, I opted out of all the snares, deadfalls, spear, killing traps I know of to go for a more humane technique to trap them.

I don't think anybody was serious about cooking, skinning, selling stray cats, it was just goofin around.

Dogs, cats it doesn't matter. The bottom line is, it the owners taking responsibility for their animals. It is not the animals fault, but they pay the price.

Yesterdays news....

Some guy is in hot water because he made some elaborate bong and puts his girlfriends "hyper" cat in it and lites up.

Says it really mellows the cat out. In the interview, this retard admits to doing it "dozens" of times.

Not sure where this was, but sounds like a Berkley law student to me!

Gotya HH, i also feel going around shooting cats or dogs is wrong. but where i am, feral cats get to be a problem. also had to put down two dogs last year, folks from town bring them to the country and just let them go, then they pack up and cause all sorts of hell. i had been seeing the ones i wound up shooting for weeks before hand, then they wound up tearing apart my neighbors yorkie, sheriff didnt have time to come out, gave us the go ahead to shoot them, and i hate shooting dogs, hell half the time i let coyote's walk anymore.

no i dont set traps in my yard or drive around and shoot cats, feral cats arnt to hard to identify when they have been living and pissing all over in your shed for months, and have multiple litters a year, then somthin has to be done.

Dog, cat, or hippo,.....if they're feral and running wild, pissing and chitting in your yard, drive a tack through 'em! Or if you'd rather...hire the job out. Where should i send my resume?

My 2 Jagd Terriers beat up the neighbor lady's cat,she has 10, & got arrested. We had to go to "dog court" & lost.Had to pay the vet bill,chain-link fence the yard & both dogs were declared "Potentially Vicious" for life.Their license fees doubled & I have to let "animal control" know if I get rid of them or move.I've been "live-trapping" & relocating her cats ever since & her "Herd" continues to increase!!!!!!!

And yes I have killed a few dogs as well. When they are chasing deer or my sheep I saddle up and go for a ride

The last cat did have a bell around his neck. I felt a little bad on that one.

ahhhh, just bustin' your chops HH

By the way, no paw prints in the sand last couple nights. I guess their on to me.

I live "out in the country" and idiot people dump their cats out along the road here all the time. I guess they think the cat will survive out in the woods by itself. They always end up at my place. I was constantly taking our cat to the vet to get an absess(sp) drained from fighting with the strays, so I started shooting them. I shot 5 one day. I finally got to where I would throw them out in the road so their brain dead owners could see what happened to their cats the next time they drove by. That seemed to stop it. Plus, we finally just gave up on trying to have a cat of our own. Life is much more peacefull now.

Now Bobcatbess is our only cat!

Guess you could say lion hounds are like bologna.
You don't want to see how they are made but the end results are pretty damn good.
Sorry for blowin a gasket.
JB's pretty good at pushing buttons too.
The "stupid" and "arrogant" comment pushed me over the edge.
If you knew me you would know.

Guess I missed the point, my point was about killing folk's pets.

Strays, be they dogs, cats or turtles fall under the lack of personal responsibility issues.

Ferals are vermin, another issue alltogether.
Those owners that make neighbors put up with wandering animals, because all they care about is thenselves, well they got it coming.
Personally I'd never have a cat if I lived in town for all of those reasons.
They keep the mice down around the house without having to lay down poison which ain't healthy for the dog or kids.
Hate me cuz I'm partial to my furball, well that's ok.
I spoze a portion of the folks on this board hate me, a portion would love me and the great majority could care less, just like in real life.
Whatever...
HH

Shooting the neighborhood cats is great sport.

HH, I know you to be a good guy, and if YD says you are that would be good enough for me any way. I didn't read any of your rant.

We no longer have a cat but still have a few neighbors cats now and then. I've learned to put up with them mostly. I put chicken wire down on all the planting beds and that keeps them from digging or scratching. Plus they do catch rats, mice and moles around here. It's all about getting along with the neighbors and living in peace. (I must be getting old, lol)

Cats need to be outside to be good mousers but they don't know property boundries too well, and they're great at climbing fences, so they are hard to contain.

An age old problem that won't be solved anytime soon.

Eel

Anyone ever try buying remington match ammo for your .22? they shoot at 1100 fps which is sub-sonic. Shot these from a bolt action, or single shot 22 and it sounds like you are shooting a silenced weapon. If you want more you can tape a 2 liter pepsi bottle around the end of your barrel and the thing is quieter than a bow. Don't let this quiet little thing fool you though. Those little bullets will still blow right through your neighbors house so make sure the cat is in the clear or silouetted (how do you spell that word?) against a tree. Its tons of fun to shoot a 22 like that. Not that I have ever done it or anything, just saying!

He who stomps the greatest stinky wins!

Personally i like giggin' 'em. Its not so much about the killing(as the success rate in giggin' is much lower), its about the hunt, and practicing my stalking skills! Being up-close and personal with the game your after....to be able to see the look in its eyes when it realizes its screwed up one too many times!

Ok enough is enough I just had to put my 2 cents in on the subject, I've been having a little cat problem mysellf, which I dont mind at times,I live in a small neighbor hood with alot of good people and some pretty cool cats, there is a couple of them with collars on sweet pea and sylvester I dont jack with. But there is a few others when I catch them in my trap I go in the house and get the pellet gun and let them have a 177. between the eyes and call it good, since I live so close to the ocean, and I like to eat crab I take em and use them for bait which really works well...
