I'm new to elk hunting, this will be a whole new game for me. I'm from south texas where you sit in a blind to hunt deer in front of a feeder. My cousin married a guy that owns 10K acres or so, and offered be their bull tag. I haven't had a chance to talk with them and go over the details, but I was curious if anyone has ever hunting that unit with success. What's the best time to go hunt with a rifle. NM wildlife page wasn't much help as far as the rut. Thanks in advance for any help!

MrSanders, never heard back from you so, my advice: "Just Do It".
Unit 48 is comprised of both public and private holdings including some awesome private hunting ranches within or bordering the unit including the Express UU Bar, The CS, Ojo Feliz, Monero to name a few.
The unit consists of high mountainous terrain (ponderosa pine, aspen, scrub oak, alpine meadows) to lower elevation open prairie habitat.
I can't imagine a ranch with 10,000 acres not containing a resident elk herd of some numbers.
Consider hunting the first October hunt if rifle. You may catch the tail end of the rut or cows coming into second cycle estrus.
You willl likely not be sitting behind a feeder but expect to do spot and stalk, watch a water hole or meadow early morning and late evening.
You WILL have a great experience whether you harvest an elk or not.
I can guarantee you will become the much coined phrase "Elkaholic"!
Good luck and do post up a summary of your hunt!

I would jump on that opportunity if someone had a 10K acre ranch and offered me an elk tag. Even if you don't get one it will be an experience you won't ever forget. Good luck keep us posted.

Mr. Sanders, hope you considered my recommendation and decided to go elk hunting in Unit 48. You can't afford to pass up the opportunity you were granted. Good luck and let us know how you do.

I would think that guy who owns that 10 k would have some idea where they are and what season you should hunt them for your best chances.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-24-19 AT 10:01PM (MST)[p]Your cousin must be one hell of a gal to pull that off. Ranchers usually don't just say hey new buddy here is a elk tag have at it. Those tags usually go to big money hunters.
Pick your cousins brain, hell she's married to the guy. I'm sure she knows where the elk are and when is the best time to hunt them.
Good luck and make sure u get the tag printed asap before he changes his mind. Lol
