Unit 17 new Mexico youth muzzloader

Hi, my son drew a tag for unit 17 in New Mexico.They only give 25 youth tags for this hunt a year, and I would love to make this hunt one of the best experiences for my son possible. We plan to scout alot and take a summer trip to check out the access points and plan places to camp. Was wondering if anyone could give tips and info on there experiences in this unit?

It is a trophy unit and with the rain and snow they had this year there should be some giants around. THey may be some bugling yet but also some bulls that are back up the mtn by that hunt.The elk will get in some rough country that most guys will not even look at.

Unit 17 is all about glassing and glassing some more. You get off the dirt roads and hike some you will find elk. That is a great tag for a youth hunt or any hunt for that matter.

Thanks, We are excited for this hunt. My son is preparing for the challenges that will come with this hunt. My son cant wait to get some boots on the ground and get some scouting in. Its early but we plan to learn the access and terrain soon. I appreciate the input bud!
