I have been out several times and can usually get into the elk. My problem is I can't seem to bring them in the last 40 yards or so. I called in one last night and it hung up. It stayed there so long I forgot it was there. I waited until after dark and was packing my stuff to head out the there it was about 50 yards barking at me. I say it because I couldn't see it. Cow or Bull. This was the third time this year they have hung up. I have heard the cows and calves talking plenty but only couple bugles and none close. All the bulls have been coming in quiet so far. Anybody have any ideas?

>be calling in elk now
>in the states.

Yeah that's correct I am currently in New Zealand for a vacation but I live in the states and I plan coming home soon LOL. I know the main hunting here starts February and the rut commences mid March for red stags. Elk hunting in New Zealand is almost identical to red stag hunting and rut which stars mid March through late April.

>Are you in Colorado? LOL

No, I am not in Colorado and I believe Elk hunting in Colorado starts August-September

Calling them in solo is very hard but doable. I prefer to pattern them early season before they leave their summer hideouts and setup a blind or tree stand and ambush them at their favorite water hole. This takes a lot of pre-work but it pays off.

Take a listen to the Gritty podcast with Ryan Carter for some background on the technique. Search for: EPISODE 360: DEMYSTIFYING ELK WITH RYAN CARTER
