Unit 61 Camping

Does anyone know of a good family camping area near fishing in unit 61? We camp on unimproved campgrounds with tents. 4wd and rough access is not a problem. Looking to have fun with the family doing some hiking, wildlife viewing and fishing. Also wanting to familiarize myself with the unit for future hunt in 2020 or 2021. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,
nk

If you're talking Colorado, all along the Divide rd there are little spinner roads that end in good camping spots.

Beautiful country.

Wyoming???

Nevada?? I'll be there in August helping my wife kill a speed goat.

There is almost no fishing in 61, see my response to your question in the Colorado forum.

Big Creek Reservoir was excellent fishing in September when I was Elk hunting. Big cutthroat and cutbows. Great place to camp away from the Divide road. North part of the unit.

Nk,

When I used to live up Unaweep Canyon we used to go frequently to Big Creek Reservoir with our little boat and troll along the bank on the right side of the reservoir past the dam a ways with lipped Rapala brown crawdad lures and really caught a lot of trout.

We'd also use 1/16th Panther Martin spinners at the little inlet creek and caught quite a few where the fence crosses the creek.

Down the road where the road to Big Creek ties into the Divide Rd, there's a campground with a hiking trail down into Carson hole.
Sometimes you can tear up the brookies in that creek. Just watch for bears down there.

As far as camping, we'd camp up and down the Divide road in dispersed areas but the best campground on that end of the Divide in my book, is the Divide Forks campground.

Have fun,

Ill second this. I had a blast fishing here and hearing bulls bulge in the trees around the lake.
