Im just curious everyone's thought about calling after mid oct i have a bull tag i drew starts 14th runs till nov 1 thanks

Depends on the area, and the year. Some of craziest rut action I've ever seen was 2nd and 3rd week of October. Like, super hot, batshit crazy bulls bugling for hours on end. But, it doesn't happen every year, or in every area. Impossible to predict when and where.

Hopefully you get into some though!

+1

I always hear bugling middle of October, last year was full rut fest where I was at.

You would be better off brushing up on cow calls. Bulls are pretty bugle shy by then. Might bugle just to see if you can locate a bull, but I would not try and move in on him with bugles. A variety of cow calls is what I have had luck with that time of year.

This^^^

Nothing makes a bull run away from you faster than a bugle during that time of year. (and in some cases, even during the rut)

I've had great luck on general season in October, early November calling in bulls, getting them fired up. Mostly cow calls but throw in a dink bugle and they can't resist. Sound like a big bull and no Bueno. ?

Calling can be effective at that time of year but like already said it can vary year to year. For instance I've heard bulls going crazy on August 25th but that is a rare year. Bulls can be going good October 25th but again it's a rare year Bugles to locate would be worth trying as well as cow calls. Regardless have a cow call with you, if you see a herd moving you can get them to stop for a solid standing shot with a cow call and I'd rather shoot at a standing animal than a walking or running animal any day.

Like others have said, bugling in mid-October varies from year to year. I think mostly due to weather. I have had success doing a few cow calls when I hear a bull bugle. It's important to sit down and wait. Guys get to impatient and move on when they cow call back and then the bull shuts up. I've had bulls come in trying to locate the cow 10-15 minutes after everything has gone silent.

If they are sounding off and you have a rifle tag in your pocket, go get 'em. Calling may and will bring in the satellite bull that time of year, but I don't think you want to chance bumping them, or try bringing something into the call.

Please let us know how making elk barks works out for you.

I wouldn't go crazy tryibg to call them in, so much as to locate them or get them to stop.

The reason you cam find elk going off at that time is the 2nd estrus for the cows that didn't take the first go round.

This can turn into an amazing opportunity with a rifle in hand, but expect the activity to be short lived and do everything you can capitalize on it if you fidn yourself in that situation. Just because they are going off one day, does not mean they will be the next.
