Whitetail bullet guidance

I'm new to muzzleloaders, and am hunting Idaho later this year for whitetail.

It seems like there are endless variables and situations to plan for. I'm looking for guidance on a bullet/ powder load to use up to about 125 yards or so. I've got a Vortek .50 cal with 30" barrel. After speaking with the folks at Vortek, I was planning on using Triple 7 2F powder and RWS 1081 caps.

Any recommendations or help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

For reasonably priced projectiles I like Hornady XTP pistol bullets like .452 300 grain in a black crush rib Harvester sabot.
lighter bullets like 250 gr work good to.

If the Idaho regulations say you must use full bore lead bullets then I'd look at No Excuses, Bull Shop Bullets, or even Hornady Great Plains bullets. I'd also test shooting these lead bullets with and with out wool felt wads between the powder and the bullet. sometimes the wad can make a big difference in accuracy.

For lead bullets with Triple 7 powder I'd probably start with about 60 grains of powder and work my way up in 5 grain increments ,
testing for the best group. With say a 460 grain No Excuses lead bullet you will likely max out at around 90 grains.

I like the XTP's. Used the .44 Cal sabots and 2 Pyrodex pellets with great success. Never had to reach out and touch and thing beyond 125 yards but in sure that load is capable if shooting further.
