Last year was a hard hunt! Lots of elk but they were deep and impossible to reach. I found some elk in the real nasty thick black timber and lead my dad and brother into one late evenly then this young elk popped up and luckily, the trees were so thick, could not even see us and stood there and presented itself with a neck shot.
Normally we used patched round balls but due to an uneducated regulation change by CPW, we had to find a conical that shot good in the 1:48 twist Traditions Hawken rifles that we both shoot.
Doing some casting, I found that the 250gr Lee REAL bullets did awesome out to 100 yards! We're talking 2 bullets almost touching. 80gr Pyrodex P with a lubed felt wad and my dad dropped this young elk in its tracks at the sound of the shot at around 50 yards.
Some of the best meat off this young'n!
