I posted pictures of my new custom .300 RUM awhile back but today I finally got out to stretch her out. I am in the process of working out my data to have a custom turret made for my scope. This picture was my first group of 3 shots at 800 yards. Needless to say I am in love with my new rifle! 3 inch group at 800 yards the first time having it out.....not too bad.

marley, Congrats, that rifle is something. Shooter aint bad either. Us RUM shooters take some crap, but you can't argue with the capabilities of the cartridge. 200 grain bullet, 3300 fps+ velocity and a group like that? If you don't mind, pm me with your choice of turret. I've been hashing that very thing for a while now. AWESOME! mtmuley

My rifle has a Leupold VXIII 4.5X14X40 LR. This same scope was on my .280 which has the Leupold built custom turret. I printed what the computer said my drop should be which put me close but not exact as you can see in the picture I am slightly low from center of the steel. Today's objective was just to see what kind of groups I could get. The next outing will be to get exact field numbers to submit to Leupold for a new turret. I don't dial for wind, I have wind printed out and taped to the inside of my scope cover and I hold for wind because it's usually so little to compensate for until you get past 500 yards. I had a 10 mph wind today while shooting but it was directly at me so no effect.

Every time I heard the chime of my gong I couldn't help but think, "there's a dead elk at 800 yards." Oh, and I was shooting today laying in the dirt with my pack as my rest. No bipod, no shooting bench, no rest under the butt end of the stock. I try to keep as close to hunting situations as I can.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-10-10 AT 09:04PM (MST)[p]Muley, the custom turrets by kenton and leupold are nice for speed...send in your verified dope card and have one cut.I like having my dope on the turret and not the stock..at least on hunting rifles that i shoot the same load in all the time..just make sure to tune your loads from lot to lot, buy powder in kegs instead of pounds..keeps variables to a minimum.

Nice shooting Marley

I CANT EVEN SEE 800 YDS. But I have been thinking about buying a 300 RUM just for spits and giggles. Thanks for the added encouragement.

I have to say that when i was in the process of setting up the gun my gunsmith had to talk me into getting the .300 RUM because I HATE recoil. I've always hated how much my .280 would hit me let alone a .300 RUM. He promised me that the muzzlebrake would make it enjoyable to shoot. I have to say that it is alot more fun and enjoyable than my .280. I feel like I can shoot it all day long other than the cost of each round. Even having only had it out once I feel more confident with it than the .280 that I have had for 20 years. Thanks for the comments. I will post more pics when I can find somewhere to stretch her out to 1000 yards.

It looks like love at first sight to me.

I put a Harrell MB on it. You can see a picture and description of my rifle under the heading "new family addition" further down the page.
