2019 hunt

Hello all, not sure if this is possible but here it goes.
Taking a 16 day family trip to Alaska in late summer/fall 2019. Since I'm already spending the money and will be up there I would like to try and put something down with my bow. Would probably have around 3-4 days or so to hunt. Would have around $2000 to spend. Looking at moose, grizzly bear or caribou (guessing caribou would probably be cheapest/easiest) since I can't hunt those down where I live.
Would this be possible?
Also would I need to put in for a draw or would I be able to buy some otc tag or a cheap outfitter tag?
Anyone help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

It's possible... Grizzly requires a guide for non residents and it will cost big $$$ so scratch that off. Moose season usually starts in Sept. so you will have to decide if that fits with your schedule. However, a 3 or 4 day moose hunt would not be something I would try. I hunt caribou with a bow the first 10 days of August every year. While I wouldn't recommend doing a 3-4 day hunt, it can certainly be done. If you want to talk more about it, shoot me a pm with your email or phone number.

As hoopscoach said, grizzly you need a guide, and moose would probably need the dedication of more days. The opportunity for a caribou is doable, though. The first 5 miles on either side of the Haul Road/Dalton Highway is bow only hunting. It is an OTC tag and the caribou should be close by during your time frame.

Just keep in mind if you are thinking about trying the Haul Road caribou hunt that most rental companies don't let you take their vehicles up there.

What part of AK do you intend to spend most of your time? The Haul Road bou hunt is a long ass drive.

For a short trip, I would look at chasing black bears in the alpine in September. Decent odds of finding one in a short 4-5 day hunt and they can be found walking in off the highway system.

Coming in cold, and expecting success on such a short trip is optimistic. You will have a great time none the less, and colors are popping around the 1st of September.

$2000 isn't going to get you much. Fly in costs start there and go up. Very difficult to find a moose/bou fly in hunt for that price. Logistically you'll lose a day on both ends for hunting. Can't hunt the day you fly in, and really you can't hunt the day you fly out unless you shoot one and it falls into game bags on the strip, the last day. :D Not to mention that bush flights in the fall can easily be delayed by a day or 4.

Good luck on your planning.

You could take a quick flight up to Prudhoe Bay and we can pick you up at the airport our hunts are normally 8 days but I am sure we can figure out something to get you on some Caribou.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-25-19 AT 08:48PM (MST)[p]2k is a tough ask. I doubt you'll get a decent, if any, fly in drop hunt. Since you are bow-hunting, I'd hunt the haul road for Caribou. Good luck and when it comes to hunting Alaska, YOU CANNOT DO TOO MUCH RESEARCH! Check, double check and then check again. Also, plan on budgeting about 50% more than you think it will cost. There are hidden expenses every where.

Hunting licenses and tag prices doubled last year so everything is going to cost more. That being said, non-resident tags are still a bargain compared to most non-resident western state tags.
