Dehydrated foods for backpacking?

Anybody know any good dried lightweight foods to eat while backpack hunting? Tuna pouches or cans seem too heavy after trying to lighten my load as much as possible. Haven't tried Mountain House or the others, they seem to come in weird serving sizes for one person. And expensive... I don't have a dehydrator to DIY. Thanks in advance!

You can't beat the 2 serving size of Mountain House or Backpackers Pantry, Lazagna or Spagetti. They both taste great and are easy to use. Just add boiling water, stir and let sit for 10 or 15 minutes and your good to go.

Mountain house has some great flavors and some single serving sizes. Look on amazon. I just tried a few ?heathers choice? and they were disgusting. I wouldn't recommend that brand.

Mountain house tastes great.....for the first 5 bites. After that I find it hard to choke down.

I like the packets of Knorr Pasta Sides and Knorr Rice Sides. Various flavors. Less than $1 at Walmart. Bring to boil then simmer on low for about 8 minutes.

Is 2 servings too much? I dont eat much lunch while hunting, so I ll be hungry... but usually hit the sack right after dinner so I dont want to be overly stuffed.

All I buy is the 2 serving size. I think a 1 serving size will leave you hungry. The 2 serving size is just right for one person.

I like the Mtn House Beef Stroganoff and the chicken with rice. 2 servings is about perfect for me when I've been burning calories.

+1 on the stroganoff and chicken and rice, I also agree that you'll want the two serving portions. Sometimes I carry my stove and eat dinner just before the evening glassing session so I don't eat too much just before bed. This is especially nice to have something warm when it is cold.

I agree the 2 serving Mountain House for one meal is perfect size for one person after a hard days hunt. Little pricy but the less weight vs amount of food carried is priceless. If you have a water source using a water purification filter is the way to go...you can purchase insulated bags to keep the food hot longer in freezing conditions. Instant coffee or coco and your set...good luck.

I like mountain house, most of them a pretty good but last year I had a long trip and ate them for 9 days and my digestive system paid the price.

Check out packit gourmet. Bought some to try and was pleasantly surprised ver good taste and not as hard on the system. Plan to use them and mountain house mixed next year.

I like the mountain house meals, but they are costly if you're out there a lot. I buy chicken in the packets at Walmart and combine it with Top Romen. It's a solid dinner as well. But Mountain House is typical dinner. Top Romen or Salmon for lunch, oatmeal and granola for breakfast. Gatorade protein bar with coffe when I wake up. Atkins chocolate peanut butter bar before bed with a little whiskey. And some snacks like trail mix throughout the day.

To me I guess it depends on how far I am going in & how long I am going . There are a lot of meals you can take with you .. Here are a few NOT mentioned here that are worth checking out !! maryjanesfarms .. Omeals .. & Heathers Choice ..

Yeah, thanks to all. I did a few Mtn House lasagna and chicken and rice meals. I chose lowest sodium offerings and the "2 serving" meals were just right.

Somebody mentioned that cheese from lasgna would require chisel to remove - not joking!! But really tasty.

I alternated between mtn house meal and old standby Ramen and tuna or chicken for dinners and a big lunch when i needed one. Two packs of oatmeal with dried fruit and nuts for breakfast. Nuts and seeds, jerky, dried fruits, 3 bags of granola for snacks! Hunted till 2nd to last day of muzzleloader season so i ate it all!!

Drank some filtered pond water last few days as it was only source closeby. Nasty-glad i had one Emergen C left to mask flavor. Glad to not get sick off that. Hunt was successful so all was great.

Give Peak Refuel a try. Best tasting dehydrated food out there. I think you can buy it on amazon, or you can just go direct. You won't be disappointment. IMO way better than Mtn House. Beef Pasta Marinara, chicken alfredo and the strawberry granola is hard to beat.

I might carry one single serve Mtn. House on trip but that's pushing it.
I'll take instant oatmeal, grits or ramen noodle mostly.
