I've noticed several people touting the ?Horn Hunter Mainbeam? day pack lately.
I'm looking at day packs in the 2,000 inch range, so I went to the Sophuntinggear web page. The mainbeam is an impressive looking pack, but I can't find specs anywhere.

Can anyone tell me how tall, wide and deep it is in inches ?

Can anyone compare how well it's built, and the material to a Badlands Super Day ?

Is there any way to strap a sleeping bag to the outside/bottem of the Mainbeam for overnight trips ?

hey uh, not meant to confuse you you or anything and I don't have an answer for you. But...you might want to take a look at the Canadian from http://blacks-creek.com

I do own the Superday and the Canadian is a much better pack with a lot more functionality. It is a little larger but that hasn't been an issue so far. Check out the videos on the blacks creek site to get a good idea of what the pack can do.

Good Luck

LAST EDITED ON Aug-13-07 AT 02:06PM (MST)[p]I am not sure what the height and depth measurements are but the weight is 4.4 lbs empty. There are straps on the bottom of the pack that hold a sleeping bag. The pack is 2050 cubes and is the most comfortable pack that I have ever used. It is big enough to haul everything that you need ie. rifle/bow, tripod, spotting scope, and not to mention all the little stuff, but small enough that it doesn't make you sweat your guts out while hiking. I personally know 3 people who have switched from Badlands to Horn Hunter and all of them say that they would never go back.
Where are you located?
There is a showroom close to SLC, or Payson Sports in Payson carries Horn Hunter packs. Do yourself a favor and compare the two packs side by side and the decision will be very easy for you.

Blacks Creek packs are known for being unusally heavy. My dad has a Blacks Creek and it is 17.0 lbs empty. Waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too heavy for a 3000 cu. pack.

Horn Hunter all the way!!!!!!!!

Thanks Sliver,
I started off with about 10 packs on my short list, and I think I have narrowed it down to the Mainbeam, and the Eberlestock X-1
I live in Fresno, Calif.

Mainbeam XL all the way, this is a great pack. You won't regret the purchase and you won't be looking for another pack for years to come. Mine has been used and abused and is still in great shape.

Another thumbs up for the mainbeam. I have taken mine to hell and back and it hasn't let me down in the three years that I have had it.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-29-07 AT 06:34PM (MST)[p]Just my humble opinion, but I USED to own a Hornhunter Mainbeam and I currently use the Blacks-Creek Canadian and it's twice the pack the Mainbeam was! The Mainbeam was built tough, but once I got my spotter and tripod in it (Nikon 60mm Fieldscope III ED and K&K Outfitter's tripod, neither of which are big in comparison), there wasn't room for much else. Really seemed smaller than it's touted 2050ci capacity. Maybe the Mainbeam XL is better, but I don't have any experience with it. I actually went to check them out one day, but HH's showroom was closed at 2:30 in the afternoon, so I never bothered going back.

The Blacks-Creek Canadian weighs nowhere near 17lbs. Sure it might be a little heavier than the Mainbeam, but it'll haul a ton more gear too, plus it expands to pack quarters, etc. Try that with a Mainbeam! You also need to keep in mind that SLIVER is buddies with the owner(s) of Hornhunter, so he's gonna be somewhat biased.

Do yourself a favor and look seriously at the Blacks-Creek line before making a decision and dropping your hard earned money on a pack. If there's a Sportsman's Warehouse near you, they carry Blacks-Creek, Eberlestock, and Badlands.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-30-07 AT 11:19AM (MST)[p]FOEMAN4X4: First off the Blacks Creek that my old man has is the Ultimate Guide, which two years ago when he bought it was the top of the line pack that Blacks Creek made and it IS 17.0 lbs empty! With that being said, I think that it is a nice pack, just way too heavy. What year model of Mainbeam do you own? I had an 05 and when I started hauling around my spotter and tripod it did not have enough room for my needs. I now have an 08 Mainbeam XL and it is more than enough for everything that my little chicken legs could possibly carry. The new Mainbeam and Mainbeam XL have pockets on either side of the pack that are designed for carrying a spotting scope and tripod in, so you no longer have to jam your scope inside the big compartment of the pack. I personally know three people who have switched from Badlands to Horn Hunter and know 3 people who have also swithced from Blacks Creek to Horn Hunter. I feel that all of the new packs are good, however all packs aren't created equal. Me and all my hunting party have put these packs to the extreme test and that is why I will stand by the Horn Hunter company. Their products have never let me down, and all parts of them are made and manufactured in the USA. Blacks creek material is of a very much lower grade and is made in China!

PS. I do not know the owner of Horn Hunter.

Okay, maybe not the owner of Hornhunter, but the guys distributing them in Utah through Sportsman's Outdoor Products....

A friend of a friend of sombody that used to work there. I didn't know this but I guess that Sportsmans Warehouse is now carrying Horn Hunter stuff. I saw the 08 Mainbeam there earlier today. FOREMAN maybe you can go check out the new pockets for the tripod and SS and see if you like the new design, I know that I love mine.

Well i think horn hunter packs are the only way to go period... i have both the mainbeam and mainbeam XL they hold everything u could ever need on your hunting trips.. And everytime i have been to the show room its open tell at least 5 to 6.. and its prob not open on sundays..

Guys I went to the Horn Hunter web page and looked at the Mainbeam XL pack and I really could not get a good idea or detailed picture of there shouler straps and hip belt system. Maybe one of you who have the new pack can take some detailed pictures of this pack and support system. I also see that BC Alaskan has an adjustable system to fit the pack to your body. How does the Mainbean adjust to fit different torso lengths?? I also wish they had some video information on there pack and how to use them like Blacks Creek does on there web page!! Thanks for the help!!!

Forget it, buy yourself an eberlestock j107 dragonfly. . . You wont regret it!

The Mainbeam Xl has quite a bit of adjustment in the straps. The shoulder straps adjust from the top down and the bottom up. The waist belt also has two different adjustments. One adjusts the size of the waist that the belt is fitting, and the other one I believe is for custom comfort setting. So you can set it to where it feels the most comfortable to you.

I'll try and take pic's tonight if I remember, I have class late but i'll try.

Here are a few pics to give ya an idea of the strap adjustment.

No expert on the others but I was in the same place you are last year at this time and went with Mainbeam XL. Very happy!!

K&K outfitter's tri-pod on one side, 80mm Vortex spotter on the other and 15X56 swaros in the rear pocket. I love the built in zippered pouches on the waist strap, rangefinder on rightside, GPS on left smaller pocket and Swaro adapter and K&K pistol grip in larger left hand waist pocket.

Everything else in the main compartment which is divided inside, kinda.

I have had a Mainbeam Xl pack for a year and I was wondering how it does packing meat head cape and antlers and how do you put them on the pack. Sweet pack though I will never go back to a badlands again. We just bought my dad the droptine fanny pack and that one is sweet to it would make the perfect roosevelt elk bowhunting pack since i likethe fanny packs with the shoulder straps for hunting the oregon coastal jungle

It does great, I have packed lots of meat on this pack over the last two years. I usually, bone out the meat, place it in a game bag, and strap the meat to the back of the pack using the strap that comes with the pack. Works out great and the inside of your pack stays nice and clean.

Sixgunn are you talking about the orange safety wrap to las your meat down with? Also how did it do on an elk cape and horns and do you just lash them down with the orange wrap? or do you mainly use the straps on the sides thanks for the help. Hornhunter packs by far are the best around and I am thinking about getting the droptine fanny pack. Nobody here in Oregon has even heard of Hornhunter hardly.

You just lay your pack down on the ground facing up, then put whatever load you want to haul on it, and strap it down tight. In these pic's I am carying right at 100 lbs total with meat, head & hide, and all the other gear that was in my pack to begin with. I weigh 160. I packed the load almost 2 miles and it was very comfortable considering I was carrying over half my own body weight.

thanks sliver that was real helpful thank you I have the xl pack to and it looks like it is tougher than nails. I have packed any bulls out with it and would it be a good pack for spiking out for a couple of days? nice ram by the way what state is that from thanks again for sharing your photos

The ram is from Utah. My friends and I have packed many deer/elk with the XL. Most of the elk were spikes and cows, however you surely could strap the head of a big bull on this same way. We helped a friend of ours on her big bull hunt and we strapped meat down as shown, like the pic's above. They left the rack off the pack's so that it could be switched from person to person, as to not wear any one person out. If you were by yourself you could strap as much weight in/on this pack that you would care to carry.

My friends and I all have XL's, and have packed out many deer and elk with them. Most of the elk have been cow's or spikes. We helped a friend with her big bull hunt and they hauled a ton of meat, and rack out with these packs. Bottom line, the Horn Hunter Mainbeam XL will haul as much weight as you care to load on your back, and do it with comfort.
You can't go wrong with Horn Hunter. Great products.

Sliver I agree I am sticking with Hornhunter and not going back to badlands and the liftime warranty seals the deal I am probably later this year going to buy the droptine fanny pack I love that one to. Also the mainbeam xl has so many pckets functions, and also toughness why get any thing else. SOP has a new lifetime customer keep pumping the great hunting products

Anybody know if hornhunter has any new packs coming out for 2009? hopefully gonna give the mainbeam xl a tryout this spring bear season packing out hide and meat. Hornhunter packs best hunting packs out hands down nothing else comes close

Yes their 2009 line will have some new features that should be really good. I haven't seen the 09 xl, but I did see the Mainbeam and it looks like the new features will be very good.

}}-SLIVER-->

Sliver what kind of new features do their packs have this year it seems like they never update thier website

The shoulder straps are new and softer. The waist belt pockets are re-vamped a little. The entire body of the pack is a little different. The Mainbeam is now a meat hauler. They have also added a couple of new pockets. They look very sweet. I have been thinking of getting a Mainbeam also so maybe I'll wait until the 09's are in Cabelas and go purchase one.

Hey sliver when does SOP update their website for there new pack line or do you know if the 2009 catalog is out yet ?

I don't know man, I got on their site today and it doesn't look like they have done it yet.

}}-SLIVER-->

I just talked on the phone with some peaple a SOP and there catalog will be available next week and they are in the process of updating there website cannot wait to see the 2009 packs and I guess they got a new one I am probably going to get a smaller pack either the mainbeam or the droptine sometimes my mainbeam xl is a little big for some of my hunts

I had a chance to check out the new packs the other day and was impressed. The 2009 line has some updated features which will enhance the overall performance of the pack. The waist belt has been reinforced and is much more sturdy. The shoulder straps have been modified slightly and are a bit more comfortable. The compartments inside have also undergone a few modifications. Specifically, the pockets are not as deep which keeps all your gear from gravitating to the bottom of your pack. They have also cleaned up how much webbing is hanging off the pack giving it a cleaner look. The new Mainbeam is 2800 cubic inches and the XL is 3800.
Sweet packs, they also have a new day pack called the Slingshot which is a great new addition to the line. As stated above, the catalog will be out shortly and the web page should be updated soon so you can see the new lines.
