S Slope Yellowstone Moose

Well, started putting in for Utah moose 25 years ago ..

Switch to desert sheep a couple times years back , had 18 moose points..

It apears I've drawn S slope yellowstone---$413 hit.

I'm going to scout my freak'in butt off this summer !!!!!!!
Semi retired were I can REALY put some time inti this.

I do know the unit verily well...
First memorys in Murdock basin with my late grammpa, packing
in by horse 'mule train' and staying for a week at a time go back to 1968/69 ..

I'm focusing mainly on Soapstone and the Provo river/ Ironmine ,western side part.
Seen a few decent bulls there the last 2-3 years ..

Thinking of scouting the Duchesne River drainages and Swift creek, learning that area better.

I know there's a bunch of you 'Basin' boys that know the S Slope
better than any one....If you happen to bump into a moose this
summer I'd love to here from ya---Wont turn down any suggestons either..Wink ;-) ..

Bess,
They changed the Yellostone boundery's two years ago
to match the new deer units.......Hwy 150 is the line.
So now Soapstone mountain is in the SS Yeliowstone unit.

I think I'll keep this tag..Wink ;-) ..

Just haven't seen many decent Bulls the last several years!

How far east on the South Slope can you hunt?

The Last Big Bull I seen around here got hit on the Hi-Way near Myton & elkun took the meat down to the Fort!

I elk and deer hunt the Yellowstone/slope. Biggest bull moose I've ever seen was on that unit. It was 6-8 years ago though. I'll let ya know if I see anything this summer while scouting. Good luck!

Off and running!

With 150 open early this year, I took advantage, and scouted it Sat/sun.

Looked in an area that has produced moose in the past, and BAM!!

I found at least 4 cows and a bull I'll be trying to keep tabs on...
Failed to get decent pics of the bull, Both time I saw him was through
the spotting scope. I would guess a 5 1/2 year old, may-be more.
His antler growth was ibto the palms--13"-14" Waddle hagging on his neck.
Hoppfuly get better pics of him in a couple weeks...

The area is GORGEOUS!!!!!

And a BIG shout of thanks to Basinbowhunter,Deerslayer88,B bess, and Horsecreek..
Guys with great info and eyes looking this summer......THANKS!

The eastern boundary is the east fork of the Whiterocks river on the divide to the main Whiterocks river up high until the confluence with the Uinta river down lower then it's the Uinta river to the Duchesne. Good luck. There are still a few good ones, but it's hard to find a good bull.

I've got one more wild card in the mix ....

I'm in for Wyo 102 with max points, 50/50 chance at pulling that deer tag.

If I draw it, I'm planning on hunting it archery the first week of Sept...

So were not going to have time to mess with those OTC bulls..

No trail cams up yet, I do have one bull found I might try a cam on.

Hey Goofy,

I fish the south slope quite a bit and always run into moose. I'll definitely let you know if I see a bull worth going after. Can't tell you how many times I've walked right into them on the river...

Hey Goofy,

Saw a couple decent bulls up Uinta canyon a couple weeks back. I was up past the end of the road kind of where the old campground (Wandin) used to be. Some good moose country in there along the river but tough to glass..you have to just go in looking for them. Also ran into a bear! Lots of critters in that canyon.

Not sure if they were shooters but pretty good bulls...sorry, don't have any pics.

If for some reaason I cant conect with a bigger bull with my
bow or ML I'll let him shoot one with the rifle........

Way to go on your Moose. It looks like it was a blast and a great time. Hope the pack out was easy. I'm still so thankful for my co-workers horse "Shiloh" on packing out my bull a mile+. Nothing like getting it down with the bow! How close was the shot?
