Going anyways

Well it looks like I did not get my general deer tag. Had a 50/50 going in so no biggie. Probably works out for the best anyways this season. Anyways I probably going to be 100% draw odds for the following Utah season. Wondering if should make a trip out there this summer just to get a feel for the unit. I would have about 3-4 days to scout towards the end of July. The probably I am trying to figure out is the rifle season is mid/end of October and the area I am looking into is a backpack hunt. For those of you that have spent some time in Utah what are the chances of bucks being somewhere close to the same area from July/August. I am looking into at hunting the back country in the Beaver unit. I could also scout at switch to bow and be good to go. But I really like rifle hunting over archery.

Either way I need to use my points for general deer. I dont want to build more than 2-3 general deer points. That will give me a chance to hopefully get to really know a unit over the next 10 years or so.

Thanks

Well Mortician, (throwback to my StrongBad viewing days)

Where we hunt general season deer, the critters are in the same general area summer to mid-Fall.

There are other areas where the deer move way earlier as evidenced on a hunt I had with a muzzleloader down south a couple years ago.

Unless you're willing to talk specifics in PM with someone, it's going to be hard to give you concrete information.

With that said, any time spent in the country will probably help.

I decided on the Beaver rifle hunt. Should be able to hunt it every 2-3. From what I have researched its a good backpacking hunt or you can focus on the lower land also. Most of my interest is high country so trying to scout in July for an Oct hunt doesn't always work out with game being in the same areas.
I have done some research already just need to get some boots on the ground. I have a small 4 day window to get some hiking in during the end of July and know the following season I will be drawing the tag. I know at some point either this summer or next I will have to drive out there anyways just to get a general lay of the land because once Sept/Oct comes I will be booked.

The bucks you find scouting will still be real close during the rifle hunt. I've hunted that area many times in the past. Those bucks will be close. Well, maybe not the ones that live in the meadows near the roads. Those bucks get hunted hard during the archery and will scatter some. But the ones that are a mile or more from a road will get pressure, but not so much to cause them to move too far.
I haven't been down there in a few years, but I'm sure there's a couple good ones still.
