How?s your luck going? As of Monday I don't have any activity on my baits. Ended up pulling one and re-registered a new site. Hopefully my luck will change. Anyone else having the same issue? Do you have bears hitting your baits?

what unit you hunting? You might have other hunters stations close by? I bet your new location will get hit if you're in one of the better units.

I set two baits the first weekend and one was hit right away and the other hasn't had any action so I'm switching it as well. I know of one other guy that has had one of his baits hit but other than that it seems kind of slow so far. I expect it to get better the later in the hunt it gets.

I have yet to be visited by or get a picture of a single bear so far. Nothing other than a few crows and squirrels have paid either of my bait piles any attention. I thought I had plenty of scent and there's definitely plenty of bait; cherry coolaid/sugar covered popcorn, breads covered with blueberry bacon syrup and molasses, COB with molasses mixed with pancake syrup and corn syrup and old grease mixed with some carmel extract for scent... Both of my sites were placed in spots the biologist said there were plenty of bears, so I'm really starting to wonder what I've missed or not done since nothing is happening. Do I just need to be more patient? Get more scent up in the air? Move spots? Anyway, good luck to you, hopefully something comes in soon!

The very first thing the went to on my bait was the raw fresh meat. Throw out a cheap steak or roast. See if that helps.

Congrats....Let's see a few pics of your bear.

I think you will see a lot more bear activity later in the hunt this year than in years past. The winter & snowfall was crazy this year so I have to think bears came out of dens later than normal and probably haven't gotten real active yet.

I wouldn't get too crazy about changing anything just yet if you are in a good unit & have some good scent out. The bears will find the bait, especially as boars are seeking out sows.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-08-19 AT 05:36PM (MST)[p]I drew San Juan last year. In 3 weeks I had a total of 0 bears hitting my bait at night. I had one small sow hit my bait at 6 in the morning. Other than that there was another small one and I mean like a cub, hit it when it was dark. I talked to an Outfitter in the area and he said it was the worst he had ever seen it. Sounds like it is still rough on the San Juan. My buddy drew the La Sals last year and saw over 20 bears hit his one bait. He shot about a 6 foot boar.

When things start off slow after a big winter and wet spring, here is a little trick you might try. Take a three foot long rag and tie it around one of your boots soak the rag in liquid smoke, start at your bait and do a 5 to 10 mile walk about through the, the canyons, timber and trails, occasionally resoaking the rag and circle back to bait. Be patient it might take a couple of days, but it will bring them in.

We have had 5 bears hit 1 bait site so far on Wasatch. The other site, we cant get to and its been the best in years past. The road is washed out and coming from the other way there has been too much snow. So we just moved the 2nd site. But it almost happened last night. Had a great chocolate bear come in at 8:30, but he knew something wasnst right. He hung up 10 yards behind the tree stand adn then left. But its been pretty active so far. And should only get better.

It might take a few years but you'll soon be a master baiter.

I wasn't able to get into my sites until a week into the hunt, both had activity within 24 hours, So far I've had two bears on the first site and 4 on the second.

I've got one big boar with two ear tags that I am going for, he has been pretty regular.

Last night was the first night I have had to sit since the hunt started. I had a group of High schoolers drive by and set up shop about 400 yards away making all kinds of noise and shooting off guns right during prime time.... pretty frustrating. Back to work for a week, will give it another go next week.

Only 2 weeks left and we're getting a little anxious. Right now only smaller bears coming in and a really pretty blonde sow but only at night. Had a guy tell me the last few weeks get better as boars will be covering a lot of ground looking for sows to breed. Hope that's the case.

We were able to get it done yesterday on a pretty good, color phase boar. The action seemed to be picking up for us quite a bit.

My buddies wife shot a monster on Friday. Showed up for the first time on Thursday afternoon. A few years ago those same friends sat 18 days before another monster showed up.

If there are big bears in your area, they will hit your bait at some point. Just gotta keep the faith if you really know they tend to be in the area.

Cheers, Pete
