Mule Deer Counties

He would say Uintah/Daggett/Duchesne! But he wouldn't be far off. The latest edition of the Utah Big Game Records book shows few bucks in recent years in the rifle records from those counties.

I'd be inclined to add Juab Toole Wayne and Grand counties as well because a good part of those counties are desert habitat which doesn't typically grow big antlers. I think small antler size has more to do with over harvest than it does genetics. Habitat also plays a big part...thus my theory that desert counties are less likely to produce big antler size.

Thats right never look in the desert for a big buck.

If you're going to use words like ?never? and ?always,? you'll usually have a hard time.

I vote for Weber County.

Very true. I should have said something like most of the time or on the average.

Sanpete County by FAR! 99.8% of all bucks that get killed are small 2 points. They never get old enough to find out how big they'll be. Too many roads and too many lazy hunters that have too much pressure on them to fill a tag.

Why? Are you writing a book, essay, thesis or an article? Doing research? Are you trying to determine which counties to avoid hunting in? Or are you just trying to stir up the forum for entertainment purposes? Or is it something else? Or is it none of my business. I think it's an odd request, especially since you're looking for counties and not units, and was just curious.

Id like to know a county in Utah that, limited entry aside, has enough 6-9 year old bucks harvested to form a pool large enough to gain any info from. We have harvested bucks, on general season areas in the 5-6 year old range most didnt score well. We hunt Garfeild co. Or juab co. I would say Garfeild, with the exception of 2 bucks taken in the 90s has the bigger bucks width and mass, but score lower because of tine length or missing tines. This info is over years and years of hunting generaly small areas within these 2 counties.

It is for a research project and I'm doing the entire county covering blacktail, mule and whitetail deer.

"But it was a big-bodied two point!" Haha! How many times have I heard that. You're absolutely right about Sanpete County and the hoards of lazy road hunters. But, you could say they are the smart ones because if you actually get off the road and hike somewhere, your hunt will just be ruined by swarms of sheep.

BTS,

You asked about 6-9 year old deer (bucks), in general areas.

I would guess the sample size on that criteria is tiny.

Any 6 year old buck, from any Utah county is a trophy, regardless of score.

Defeating a buck that has survived 5 hunting seasons is an accomplishment.

I second the, ?Not in the arid desert? comments.

Look at Nevada for an example.
