Well I'm back and after 18 yrs of waiting I got my biggest one to date. (the only one I have killed) I joined this site and of course asked for help for unit 67 4th rifle (kinda once in a lifetime tag). I thought members would recognize this and help me out. As expected I did not get much. But MANY THANKS to those few of you that understood my situation and did offer your advice. Being a non resident, 18yrs of patience ect? I promised a report so here it is.
Got to Gunnison Friday night Nov 9th. Did talk to several locals and 3rd season hunters, some offered advice, but nothing seemed to pan out. Started scouting Sat morning. Spent most of day on Northeast side of unit. Saw only 1 decent buck. Next day 11th, scouted upper Northwest side. Again saw lots of people very few deer. Only 1 decent buck. Started snowing 12th, so decided to take a drive thru the National forest up high. Visibility was poor and saw only a few deer and elk hunters. Did see a pretty good one in the National forest, by my standards anyway. 13th decided to drive south towards Huntsman Mesa. Rut was kicking in saw over 100 doe and almost all had a buck or several bucks with them. Saw the biggest mule deer of my life on the hoof, bedded down with some does about 30yds off the highway! Of all the bucks seen that day he was clearly the one I wanted. But as I said he was off the road so ever one in unit had him pegged. Opening morning I was on dirt road close to where I saw him. Got daylight saw multiple bucks but not him. Even saw one thought hard about shooting but not first hour of season after 18yrs. Looking around Huntsman, saw lots of doe but most didn't have a buck with them like the day before. I was bummed. Saw several bucks at daylight for couple hours and they just disappeared. Guess rutted all night and were laid up, plus vehicles and hunters? I didn't want to be one to settle and have to shoot a smaller buck just to put a tag on. I had already decided I was going home and frame the tag instead of taking a smaller young buck. I thought what the hell. Everyone has told me hunt the lower elevation, snow pushed the deer out of the higher elevation. I think everyone had been told the same thing. I thought if I could find one still up high he was going to be a toad. What the hell do I know I'm from TX and never Mule deer hunted in my life.

So I went to the National forest. Was all by myself except for the elk hunters. Walked up hill to glass and saw some doe about 100 yds out of the aspens. they had seen me crest hill in my bright orange get up. So much for deer not seeing orange. They know the drill. Caught movement in the aspens and saw what was definitely a buck and by his body size a BIG one! he stood about 25 yds in trees but I could tell he was good. I ranged trees, 678. A friend here in TX had told me about a deer call that the does would come to. After some research sounded to me like a jackrabbit in distress, so that;s the call I had. I had been using it while scouting and was amazed at ho I would see just a couple doe 200 yds out. I could sit in vehicle blow the call and here comes 15 or 20 deer running to me out in the open. It was crazy. Anyways I got prone, I had been practicing here at home with my 300 WM out to 800 yds so I was confident in 678, with almost no wind. So doe are standing there looking at me and I blow the call 3 times. Here come the doe running to me. And of course HE wasn't going to let them out of his site so he came out of the trees, and OH MY goodness, I probably could have called him in with the does to under 200 yds, but all kinds of things were going thru my head. Was someone else watching and going to shoot him first, Were elk hunters going to screw it up? So I shot and my hunt was over at 945 am opening day. After 18 years. I'm still questioning whether I could have found a bigger one being the rut and all? But after 4 days of hard scouting other than the one off the highway this is the biggest I saw. If you were in 67 and saw a bigger one don't tell me, PLEASE!

And like I said in my other post asking for help for the deer hunt, I have 19 NR PP for elk next year and would appreciate any and all help I can get. Just like the deer, it would be my first and only elk hunt after 19 yrs of waiting. And of course I don't know what I'm doing, heck I'm hunting mule deer with a jackrabbit call!!!!

Congrats, nice buck, Don?t know much about Colorado so can't help with the elk, I'm sitting at 1 point for deer and gonna hunt areas we can draw on low points. Nice patience waiting that long, kudos!!!

Good report on a hard to draw tag. I wish more hunters would report from these hard to draw areas. It's not like any of us are going back anyways. If I can help with elk advice, I'd be glad to do it. It seems to me that 61 or 76 are your best do it yourself options for elk. If you wanna pay a guide and hunt private land, there are good options, but it'll cost you. I hunted 61 this year and I'll share info if you need it.

Pretty buck by the way.

That's a big buck. I'd say you did real well. I'd like to add photos to the Contest Gallery, can you email me a couple photos with you not cut out? If you'd like of course.
Congratulations

That is a great, mature, heavy horned buck, you can't ask for more than that. Score is overrated you did great. Congratulations......

Congrats, that's a great buck, love the mass! I really enjoyed your story. If I were you for my elk hunt, I would agree with what the others have suggested and look at units 61 or 76.

Congrats PD, even if you are from TX!!! Ha ha, just kinda kidding!! Nice buck , love the mass. Dont think many folks could pass on that one.
Dont have any info to share regarding elk- sounds like you'll figure it out. Bring that call!!!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-28-18 AT 08:50PM (MST)[p]Thanks everyone for the comments. For those that asked about the call I used it was a CIRCE professional 3 calls in one. I used the jackrabbit on the deer. I have one of the older one's that is about 30 yrs old. LOL Guess I should call them and see if I can get on their pro hunter staff guess their sales are about to go up!

I think he was 25 1/4 inside, but don't quote me. The taxidermist is supposed to be scoring him. I do know his bases were about 5 3/4.And he carries it all the way out to his tips. Everyone who saw the pics before I got home then saw him in person said the pics don't do him justice. I don't get wrapped up in score. As soon as I saw the length of his 3rd tines I knew I had to shoot! He is definitely one of those who didn't have ground shrinkage. Everytime I looked at him on way home and after I think he got bigger!!

Another thing I forgot to mention and I'm no expert but I saw lots of bucks that had a slick one tine that had not forked. You would look at him with one side deep fork and be impressed then put binos on him and see just one slick horn. We call those culls in TX and would shoot them on site! It's a shame that this awesome unit has that genetic defect. Too bad DOW wont let you take a trophy and one of these freaks.

And thanks so much to everyone so far that has offered elk advice. It's still early but will definitely let you know what I decide.

I've actually seen that "slick tine" in other states like Wyoming and South Dakota too. It's more common in 2.5 and 3.5 year old immature bucks, but it is a defect if you're a trophy hunter, but probably not so much to the deer itself.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-01-18 AT 08:36PM (MST)[p]I think we saw that buck! We went over into 67 scouting after our hunt in 66 second season. We saw this beautiful dark heavy horned buck that I initially took to be a 3X3. Getting glass on him as he entered some timber,I thought I could see forks on his backs. Couldn't wait to get home and tell my daughter. She will be applying next year for 3rd season.

>LOL don't forget your jack rabbit
>call next time!

I ran my own custom call business for 15 years. I dabbled in fawn distress calls. It got down right spooky at times field testing. There were times I thought I would be trampled. Does REALLY get with it when they hear fawn distress.

Hi longshot,
I was going to scout 61 this past sept. But didn't because of the fire. Therefore I feel a little behind in preparation for 61 archery in 2019. In your opinion would you hesitate and learn the unit or could a couple days scouting get you in the game. I just hate feeling like this but don't really want to wait another year either. If you wouldn't mind what is your take on 61 archery.

Great story. Great buck! I would have shot him too. Good luck on your elk quest. You may be a point behind for 61. It is a great unit I hunted it years ago when I was a rookie elk hunter. Got 20 points now waiting to go back, but I have been hunting other units and states so maybe I will be a little more experienced elk hunter when I do draw 61 again on a year or two.

Thanks for sharing...what a great buck!!! Because of the mass, I would have taken him if he was only a 3X3.

pdkillr,
Per your inquiry about elk hunting with 19 points, personally I would hunt the Rut with a muzzleload tag in unit 76. There is nothing more exciting than calling screaming bulls. You can call bucks with a rabbit call, so why not bulls? Get some calls, watch videos, and practice, practice, practice. Come out this summer and learn what you can about the area. Practice your cow calls and maybe you can call in some cows. Check out the drainages and find elk. They won't be far from water. Anyway, whatever you do, good luck and have fun.

Great Buck- congratulations . I love calling deer also, it is truly amazing to watch deer come to the call. My partner and myself are also sitting on a lot of points for Elk, pm me if you would like to talk Elk areas

Hawkbill-- Great story &'super stud buck-- you did great ! A big WOW for you.! I live in Fort Collins now, an old guy at 71, LOL !? I grew up north of Fredericksburg 20 miles out, HS Class '65.
I have Resident Points of 13 elk , 10 deer, turned elk tag back in last year, was going to hunt 61--2 nd rifle, but in July '18 I got a nasty leg infection & Dr cancelled hunting for the seasons-- spent 7 days in hospital & just now getting back to normal. Lousy luck !
61 had fires last summer & burned quite a lot of timber. I did a lot of research on it, but never even got to recon it. Lots of elk & first 2 rifle seasons are usually good, but elk top out around 280--310 &'few 340-350 bulls,'very few.
Unit 40 has bigger Bulls I'm told but more private lands too. I'm,not sure where to,try for this year, elk or deer.
I'm a trophy antelope nut too. I lived in Cheyenne 10 years & hunted them in lots of units, lived in Flagstaff , AZ 14 years too.
Text me or E Mail if I can assist some on basics of 61 elk Co. Glad to help any way I can!'?

Very Nice Gunnison Buck!
I'm sure you already put in for an elk tag but my choice would be gmu 61 there are some really good bulls over there.

Those "genetic" deficient bucks are young, and will be giants one day. One thing that always blows me away about the Basin, is how big the antlers are on 1 and 2yo bucks. THe one posted above has more mass than mature bucks in most units, and most of Montana.

Nice buck you got there.
