I just put in with 15 res points for Colorado GMU67 for 4th season deer and should draw it this year according to the number of points it took last year to draw a tag. I have been putting in for 44 4th but don't think I would ever live long enough to draw a 4th season tag in 44. I have not hunted that unit before and have not been over in that area in over 20yrs. I live about 60 miles away from the unit so scouting the unit many times this summer and fall will not be a problem. I picked this unit because I just turned 69 in Jan and I don't get around in the high mountains of Colorado as well as I use to and think that it might be an easier hunt? I also picked this unit for a chance at killing maybe a pretty good buck. Any help from anyone that has hunted that unit in the past would be appreciated.

It's funny how some people can get a conversation going with a post and others can't seem to even get a response I guess you have to some how get in the club?

LAST EDITED ON Apr-08-19 AT 04:06PM (MST)[p]Huh, ya 12 posts is getting up there, I'm shocked no one has responded. I personally don't know squat about 67 other than it's reputation. I'm sure you will have a good time. Good unit, with good genetics, you never know, could turn up a beast. Lucky for you 60 miles away is nothing, guys should be picking you're Brian. Hopefully you spent some time there in late November/December. That would be worth more info than you could ever find here.

You get in the ?club? by contributing and helping others. Not showing up the week after the app deadline begging for help and handouts and then complaining when no one shells out freebie info. According to my research you live damn close to the unit. How about you be a little proactive and go put your own time and money into scouting it like most of us you're begging for info from have....

LAST EDITED ON Apr-08-19 AT 05:15PM (MST)[p]You didn't hear from anyone as the draw was closed and very few were on the site. I would recommend searching the archives on 67 and reading some of the reports. If I were you I might want to go scout right now before the deer move off the winter range. They will likely be in that vicinity during 4th season. Scouting this past December would have been the best thing you could have done as scouting in the summer and early Fall likely will not turn up what you are looking for other than learning the roads. I am sure you will have a good hunt, but if you don't get some good Intel you might want to consider turning in the tag and scouting late November/December and getting the tag the following year. With a short 5 day season and scouting during 3rd season being a bit hard with other hunters you might want to consider that option. Good Luck!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-08-19 AT 06:13PM (MST)[p]Buckhunter64 Good Luck in the draw! I just hope they don't cut the tags back from 15 to 10 this year there was a lot of snow over there this winter. I was over there in late Nov and again about a moth ago on the way to Crested Butte there were a lot of deer killed on the highway on the N side of blue mesa but that's pretty much normal for over there.
Let me know if you draw and I will let you know if I draw and maybe we can meet up over there.

nripepi I was over there in late Nov and will be over there as soon as DOW will let us into that country and when it's dry enough not to tear up the roads. Don't know if you live in Colorado but right now you won't get anywhere off the road in that country. Gunnison had over 6 feet of snow in town this winter. I will also be in the unit high and low this summer and fall trying to learn the country. I have been as alot of others trying to get a 44 tag but this year I said to myself I think it's time to look at another GMU. I just retired last fall and have as much time as I need to put into this hunt as I'm not going to wait this long for a tag again.

elkmo41 Sorry didn't check my in box
I'm still learning the in's and out's of this site.
Thanks a lot i appreciate it!

You should be good to go if you scouted it this past year, the deer will likely be close by. Hunt the doe groups and check the fringes around them. Good luck!

Nice response and Yes I do live very close to the unit I live out of Delta Colorado and have no problem spending time in the unit to learn it or helping others on this site with areas I have hunted. I will also help anyone next year with any info I can provide for gmu 67 after I learn that unit. I have hunted gmu 61 several times both rifle and muzzy I have guided in gmu 62 for 15 yrs in the past and have also hunted gmu 52,521,411 on the Grand Mesa and have hunted both gmu 52 and gmu 63 over by Crawford. I also have hunted both A & B areas in Calif. from Mendocino County to Humbolt and Trinity Counties and like I said I have no problem helping anyone I can I really didn't think I was begging for info and from some of the responses that I have received some people that have hunted this unit before have been very helpful and for that I thank them. I'm a lot older than you are by looking at the pictures in your posts, but when I grew up in the 50s and 60s hunting was a lot different and people were a lot different in those days. Friends and their friends and family got together and went hunting and it didn't matter if anyone got a big buck or who if anyone got one everyone had a great time. It's so very sad that hunting has become what it has in this day and age. Like I said I have gotten some very nice and helpful responses to my post and to that I say Thank You to those who have helped me. Coloradoboy this is my response to your helpfull post!!

Best of luck. IMO the G&F upped the tag numbers prematurely. THe herd is still very young, with very few mature bucks and lots of little bucks to choose from, and many of those young bucks were shot last fall. Winter takes it toll on mature bucks after the rut. IMO the basin hasn't recovered from the bad winter a few years ago, and was just getting back in shape from the 07/08 die off.

It would be interesting to see the average size of deer killed in the Basin last year. I would bet it might be 150" if that. Can't kill a big one if you shoot a small one, and they can't get big if they die via bullet when their young.

On the bright side, F&G may have helped the herd make it through the winter by allowing more to be killed in hunting season vs die this winter.

I hunted 4th season last year. Didn't have a clue what I was doing never had hunted mule deer before. Guess I just got lucky. But I saw at least 20 bucks that were over 160". And that was driving around scouting. but to your point I did see LOTS of young bucks.

It seems to be a common problem in the basin. The winter 07/08 took out a pile of top end deer and the CPW has kept right on pace with issuing tags the past decade. Guys simply don't want to eat a tag so they consistently kill the 3 year 150 to 170ish type deer that would be giant at 5 years plus years old. The genetics have and always will be there, but the upper age class of deer are very few and far between these days. It would cause an absolute uproar but if units 54,55,66,67, and 551 were closed to deer hunting for 2 to 3 years it would be amazing what would come in result of it.

The gunny herd will never approach the pre 08 winter numbers again, cdow willl not allow that to happen.

I am definitely coming hunting if I draw. I just wanted to be sure no one could find out about my secret spot and switch over and take my tag ha ha.
Unless the winter just totally doesn't let up in kills all the deer may have to return the tag but I do intend to draw.
Thanks for answering the question

To all: Don't panic. Read pdkillr's post above. All the 160s he saw will be bigger this year and he killed a real good buck last season. The snow south of Gunnison was not as bad as north. Take a look at the Colo road cameras in the valleys like Powderhorn. It's Springtime in the Rockies!

Would there be a general area not unit specific that u would recommend over the basin units? Idk to me they seem to have the right combination of decent draw odds for some hunts especially early season , great potential and plenty of public land and some remoteness u could get away. Idk I have 4 pts not doing a hunt this yr but I'm thinking maybe 55 next yr second season or potentially 54 muzzy combined w a elk hunt. I think that could be a fun hunt. But I'm also open to other ideas? I've spent some time in 55 and have saw some great deer but late season are too tuff to draw there.

No panic here. I hope to draw and get out of this rat race. If they issue 4 NR tags like last year I think I have a good chance. What happens if say 4 tags are available and multiple people have the same number of points for the last remaining tag? Who gets it?

LAST EDITED ON Apr-11-19 AT 12:55PM (MST)[p]
It would be the luck of the draw-
4 NR Tags for unit=

1 - 21 pts
1 - 20 pts
1 - 19 pts
6 - 18 pts 1 NR would draw with 18 pts 5 NR would get a preference point

I'm glad you thought my secret spot joke was funny.
It's the non res with more points than me that I'm concerned about.
If I draw that tag I have no intention of turning it back in.
Thanks though.

Jeff,
Don't worry about NRs. They are in a different pool than residents.
They get 30 or 35% of the tags, I don't recall. NRs almost always require more points. After landowners take their cut off the top, residents get what's left. You can usually tell how many points it will take by what happened the previous year. Sometimes, people come out of nowhere and dump a lot of points unexpectedly. If you thing you will draw, you probably will.

Jeff,
I just remembered your from Nevada. Duh! Same applies to NRs. I just quit giving advise. Good Luck. I hope you get your tag.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-11-19 AT 05:24PM (MST)[p]buckhorn- Sent you some Pics I just took from my house of the Grand Mesa, West Elks by Crawford, and Uncomphgre Plateau.

Just messing with you buck. Either way you're in good shape this fall, stop stressing about getting the perfect tag this fall and go hunt you'll find a good buck.

RE: GMU 63

I see you've hunted 63 near Crawford. What year was that ? I scouted there about a week in '12 Nov thinking about 4 th season deer. Now I have 10 Resident points & still can't seem to find a unit I think is worth a try for trophy deer. In '12, I did see one buck taken by a resident from Delta that appeared to be approx a 185 plus, a fine buck. It was in the back of his truck.
What is your current impression of that unit ? I'm still looking for maybe ' 20. Last time I hunted was '06 in 551, before the snow killed 90 % of the Gunnison herd. I never saw a buck over maybe 175 in 551, so I had tag soup. Any thoughts would be appreciated !

RE: GMU 63

If the 2019 deer quota proposals get approved we should all draw our Gunny choices this year
Good luck and hope to see you out there this fall.

Hello all. Just joined this site after learning of it from an acquaintance. Great looking site. Wish I'd known of it sooner...
So, here is my deal: I've drawn a 4th season NR deer tag in 67. ( yup. LOTS of NR points). I was able to spend a day in the unit a couple weeks ago while doing a family vacation. Beautiful country and lots of it! I have a general idea of how I want to hunt a couple areas but always welcome any feedback.
I'll be out scouting a few days before the opener. Since I'll be doing the hunt solo, thought I'd throw it out there to see if any individuals with future plans to hunt the unit would be interested in accompanying me for a day or 2 or 3 while scouting and/or hunting to learn the unit a bit themselves while lending another set of eyeballs to the effort. PM me if there is any interest.
Thanks!

Just curious, how many deer did you see and what were they on your recent scouting trip? Everybody told me they migrate in during 4th season and I assumed there were no deer there this time of year.

I did not see any deer. Wasn't really looking for any. Just checking out roads, access, etc. Ton of old droppings where I hiked so there has obviously been a bunch of deer at some point.

I also picked this unit for a chance at killing maybe a pretty good buck. Any help from anyone that has hunted that unit in the past would be appreciated.

Good Luck Comules! Hope you kill a big one!

I will be hunting south of you in 66.
