Gunnison basin winter

Well it looks like winter has finally decided to fade away. Now that it's over and the draws are in the works, what do you locals or folks that spend some time in that country think the end result is after last winter? How did the deer herd take it? Good, bad, ugly?

I'm hoping there's at least one good buck still alive.
And I am hoping he will be exactly where I am this coming hunting season.

I think things should turn out fair from my observations. Luckily a lot of the big snows hit more late winter and spring so the bucks had some what recovery time post rut to try and put some weight on and regain strength. Don?t hold your breath though there are still going to be some dead loss as always. Hwy 50 is damn near the biggest deer killer when the deep snow drives everything to the bottom of valley in search of food..

I drove to Gunnison 8 days ago just to see what was up. Between Monarch and Gunnison on Hwy 50 and up Hwy 114 I saw 12 to 15 dead deer. I'm sure I did not see all the road kill. I've seen it much worse in the past. I think the herds made it mostly OK through the winter. I saw a few deer and elk from the highway but most of the animals have moved back away from the roads. It was way to muddy to get anywhere off maintained roads without tearing things up. The roads from GMU 67 to Saguache Park in GMU 68 were impassable. I also drove the Doyleville Cutoff through GMU 551 and all the access roads were impassable. There probably won't be any early shed hunting. It would not surprise me if the Forest Service closes some access roads until things dry out.

I will be driving out to Gunnison from Reno for 4th season . I plan on getting there around November 6th to start scouting. It's about a 16 Hour drive and I will be needing a place to stay. (Motel or Cabin etc)I will be solo and will also have a small camp if needed. Any suggestions on a hunter friendly place.
Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Apr-25-19 AT 06:24AM (MST)[p]Buckhorn: What unit will you be hunting? If you are north of Gunnison, look at Three Rivers Resort in Almont.

buckhorn......are you sure you're gonna get a tag? If so, how many points did you apply with & nr?

If staying in Gunny, you can't beat either the Quality Inn or the ABC motel. Both are within walking distance of the downtown eateries and watering holes. I've mostly stayed at the Quality and they are very friendly toward hunters, most of the town is for that matter. They also have a hot tub open until about 10 and coffee is always brewed and ready in the office. I've stayed at the ABC for work a time or two. I believe they have a hot tub as well but never checked it out. The ABC is like going to Gunnison 40 years ago, and I mean that in a good way. You can't beat the owners for niceness, I've always enjoyed my stay there. Good luck!
