Cow Moose 7, 8, 191!!!

I was drawn for cow moose in 7, 8, 191! I'm pretty excited to fill the freezer. Any recommended starting points for this unit? I'm out of state (Idaho). Any tips on where to find the biggest, nastiest cow moose this side of the Mississippi would be appreciated! I drew muzzleloader but am considering switching to one of the other seasons depending on work schedule (military so that can be unpredictable at times). Do I have to go into a wildlife office to do that? is it possible for an out of stater to do that over the phone?

It looks like the harvest rates the last few years has been pretty good in unit 8 so that's where I plan to start. I plan to camp. What is the weather like in September? Would October be better? How are the roads? Should I buy a 4-wheeler? Any decent upland bird hunting in unit 8? Any other OTC hunts going on to be concerned about?

Thanks ya'll!

My friend had that tag 2 years ago. he hunted unit 8. lots of elk hunters.
my friend walked around talking to people in camp asking if they had seen any moose. one of the first few guys told him where they just seen a cow. my buddy went to the place he was told and shot his moose. not bad for 1 day of hunting.

Bump. As I learn more about this unit I am really getting excited! Seems like it will be a great hunt and shouldn't be too difficult to find a cow. What are your thoughts on judging a young cow vs an old cow? Will the meat quality be better with a young cow? With or without calves? What are the access roads like? I plan to hunt off the roads but I want to be able to get a truck or ATV within a mile of the kill site. Is an ATV necessary for this unit? Trying to decide between towing a small camper or an ATV. What would you bring?

Also, I have read that Colorado parks and wildlife has a database of previous kill sites...? Where can I find this?

Archery and muzzleloader elk hunter camps can be a great source of info for moose hunters. I would keep the muzzleloader license if I were you. Rifle hunts are later. Be prepared to deal with the meat and keep it cool. The wildlife officials will check to be sure it is cared for properly! You shouldn't need to go far from a road. Good luck!

Feel free to pm me, I have killed 2 moose in those units, live within 60 miles and hunted that area for over 30 years.
