Ive been in the same unit since you could get deer, bear, elk, turkey, small game and fishing for $25.

I have no clue when they went to numbered GMUs.

I have been hunting since the mid 80s and I can't remember when they didn't go by GMUs.

Yep I think 88 was the first year I hunted there and you could just show up and buy a Deer tag no drawing. I don't remember if the whole state was like that but up around Craig it was.

I tried to google the answer, but no luck. First year I hunted Colo was 1965, and all licenses were sold over-the-counter at stores everywhere hunters congregated. If I recall, there were several units in place (Mt. Evans Elk Management) where drawings were conducted; but that may have been early 70's. There was a "one license per species" rule to prevent guys from hunting both rifle and bow seasons in a single year.

Yep, you had to pick your season to hunt deer and elk in the same season. Last year I hunted 3 seasons and killed 4 animals. What has that done to the perceived number of hunters in the field when you hunt?

Numbers of hunters afield seems to change with conditions. Some old favorite places (parts of NW Co) used to be crowded with game and hunters, but as the animals moved on, so did the hunters. Other areas (Front range draw-only) have remained steady in both game and hunter numbers. The hunter crowding in over-the-counter units and units with excessive leftover tags has become unnaceptable (at least in my mind).

The first year I hunted there was in '87 or '88. They had GMU's then. I'm not sure when they started it.

I put the question to the CPW, and they stated that the concept of Game Management Units was introduced in 1957, west of the Continental Divide. So pretty long time ago!

Wow, I started hunting in 68. I guess I just dont remember.

Thanks.
