Looking for some general info about this unit. Plan on making a trip to this area in August to check it out for the upcoming hunting season. I also drew a muzzy tag in Utah for deer(Book Cliff unit) and plan on checking out both during this time frame. I have a 20 ft toyhauler that I want to stay in and wordered about camping spots. Also, will the quad be useful on this hunt? Looks like Douglas Pass is the spot to be hunting deer, is there areas to park the trailer in this area? Road conditions during that time of the year? Should I park low and drive up every day? Other places that may have places to camp? Thanks in advance. Looked on the internet and got ON X map.

First question I have is what quality of deer are you looking for? Douglas is not the place to be, unless you are willing to get off the roads and do some walking sidehills. If it was me I would look further west or south of where you are looking. A four wheeler is a great quick way of getting around. The road conditions are not bad if dry or snowy, but if its muddy, plan on a clay base mud that will not come off your boots, tires, ect. Tire chains are a must!
Coal canyon ha had some good buck in the past, use your glass and other hunters. If nothing else you will see some kick ass country.

Thanks for the reply. I have glass and will spot as much as possible. Looking for a decent deer. Won't shoot a small one, unless it wanders into camp the day I'm leaving. Plan on scouting the area out in August to get camping spots picked out and look for any good areas. Never been there before so excited to see what it looks like and hopefully see deer. Thanks for the reply.

Low deer density and very thick. Lots of private ground up high around Douglas Pass. Quad is a must in my opinion unless it doesn't rain or snow, then its still a really good idea. I have seen bucks from the desert floor to the top of the unit during deer season. Good luck, you will run into a good buck when you least expect it. Lots of OTC elk hunters but there isn't a whole lot of elk killed during that season. Did I mention it was thick? And steep?

Why don't they kill very many elk? Too thick and steep? I'll be north in 21 deer hunting and am getting my son an OTC elk tag.

I like hunting areas with low elk densities these days... usually means fewer people, but that doesn't sound like the case there. Hopefully, we can find some country in 21/30 that's rough enough most people don't want to go into. I know there are a lot of roads, but looks like there are a few spots that you could get a few miles into some rough canyons.
