With the new lower $100 NR bear tag price

Was just up in Colorado last week. Saw 4 bears including one off the back porch of my cabin and LOTS of bear sign where I was scouting. Have a first rifle elk tag, so I bought a bear tag this year. Never bought one before, but for $100 and all the bears/ sign I am seeing, figured I would give get one. Prob only a 10% chance of seeing one in October, but for the price, I figured I would give it a go.

OTC tags with a cap if you have another tag in your pocket.

Saw this guy from my deck. Prob 130-150er. But saw a 300 lb one that I didn't get a picture of.

We do have ample bears that's for sure! Please take a few home with you in your coolers.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-11-19 AT 05:18PM (MST)[p]Never really had much desire to hunt one but seeing a couple of big ones kinda got my blood pumping.

Doubt I could ever get my wife to try bear meat but I am game. As I understand it, you are not required to keep any meat but I may haul the backstraps and hams out.

So just skin out ( with proof of sex still attached) and haul hide/head out and get it checked at a CPW station?

Maybe I was told wrong, but I can find no regs either way. Can you supply a link to having to keep the meat?

Certainly sounds like I was misinformed. Thanks for the info! Has this always been the case?

CPW thanks you. They can now afford to add more "bicyclists use extreme caution" signs to a cattleguard in the middle of nowhere. You going to set a blind up on your deck or just a chair?:)

Not disbelieving you, but the info you gave does little to clear this up:

17. Fail to reasonably dress, care for and prepare edible wildlife meat for human consumption.

"EDIBLE" meat is all it says. Doesn't say "big game animal" meat. However, the newspaper article does seem to make it clear that it must indeed be preserved. Thanks

you have to take the same cuts as you would from an elk...it is actually pretty good in stew and cut into stir-fry strips and pan fried ... skin it quick and trim the fat layer off and take care of it like elk and it will be good

Very true, you can also keep some of that fat to render into chicharrones and use the fat to cook with. I prepare bear virtually the same as my other big game meat.

Here's some chicken fried bear. Damn good.

Yeah its self explanatory they are a big game animal therefore it is the same requirement as deer, elk, antelope, etc. By the way bear meat is delicious my family loves it. I've killed 8 bears now and not one has tasted bad.

A couple of great bear recipes can be found on Everything Eichler..Michell Eichler knows how to cook ! Meat Eater..Stephen Rinella has a couple of good videos. He got the ol Trickey-no-sis so he is really cautious. I think bear is about like pork.

Keep it and eat it, you'll probably like it. I would suggest having some smoked. Also the fat will render into useful oil. You can't sell it but some oldtimer will want it.
By the way, I saw a guy bring a lion to the taxidermist, where he met the Wildlife officer for proper tagging. The officer got kind of angry because the hunter had not properly cared for the meat. Said he would let the guy off the hook only if he took it back to public land and at least field dressed it!

I've had my last couple bears primarily turned into sausage and smoked sausages. A roast here and there isn't too bad. I did one on my pellet grill a couple weeks back and it wasn?t to shabby.

I'm a NR from Pennsylvania and I've taken a couple bear here and eaten the meat. It's not great, but then I'm not crazy about mule deer either, especially 3rd season ones. One think I'll recommend is soaking the roasts in buttermilk. They're pretty decent that way. Other than that, dress the meat up some way to make it decent tasting.
