So what's the skinny on this hunt? The tag is good for 15 A and B and 18A. My understanding is 18 is the better unit to focus on? I have OnX and I understand the unit is very checkerboarded. Are most roads open to travel through the private to the public parcels? There are some larger tracts of state land that are in the cottonwood mts that look good as well some larger pieces around Xbar ranch? The fort rock doesn't allow hunting from understanding so that eliminates a good portion of southern part. Looks like a lot of houses, roads in the eastern part. There is also some country in the southern part that looks good as well to east of fort rock. I understand the elk here can be nomadic and depending on moisture and feed they could be be anywhere. Also some BLM that doesn't look bad either in some places. I know it's shaping up to be a good yr overall in Arizona. Any feedback is much appreciated! Thanks

Congrats on drawing your tag. These units are at "the edge of the world". They border awesome elk units as you probably know. Personally, they just popped up on my radar recently. It might be difficult connecting with anybody with much experience. Best of luck to you!

Hey thanks! Yea they have extremely limited tag numbers historically. I've actually spoken w the biologist and I think I have a good feel for the hunt. But yes it would be great to connect w someone w knowledge of the unit(s)

If your unit border a great unit for elk, I would hunt close to that border.
Cow calls should be your best friend/ with a bugle now and a long then.

I'd be getting in contact with Craig Steele with Exclusive Pursuit Outfitters. That area is home to them. Hard working guy

Thanks! Im not doing the guide/outfitter thing so I wouldn't think he would prolly offer much advice but I could be wrong

I think Don Martin would be worth talking to, he lives near the units and has experience in that part of Arizona. If you want an alternate , I'd suggest Greg Krough.

I spoke w Don via PM. Yes I agree he is very knowledgeable it seems but is a guide himself so I wouldn't expect him either to give up much info on the unit due to him guiding there which I totally understand. I really feel I have a good grasp of the unit. But obviously it would be great to hear diff ppl perspectives that have experience there too.

Interested in how your hunt went
Don, the unit was very tricky. I will say everyone seemed concentrated in one area. I didn’t see an elk for 7 days then I finally found them and killed a nice 6 pt day eight. They were bugling once I did find em. Thanks! I don’t know how to post a pic or I would

Send me them via email and I can post them up for you.
