LAST EDITED ON Apr-08-19 AT 09:34AM (MST)[p]So I picked up a gen. elk tag for AZ 12 a,b and 13 a,b. I struck out on all draws so I figure what the hell, i know this is a difficult hunt so any insight i can get is appreciated. I haven't hunted these units before so going in blind.

I haven't been out there nearly as much as others but in 5 archery deer hunts, one early rifle, two late rifle, 7 fall turkey hunts and one spring turkey hunt I have not seen even a track or turd.
A buddy of mine said one night 15 years ago off the 271 he saw a cow but he's a bs?er.
Good luck and plan it around hunting something else like squirrel, turkey or grouse so you get to have some fun.

Last year, at this time, there was a small herd hitting spare tank about every 1-2 weeks. Its by the Saddle Mtn Overlook on the east side, close to the GC boundary. Probably best to go before the green up and the park opens, like this month. Kinda weird elk hunting in April though! Good luck.

Hey thanks build! I'm going up real soon. My tag is good for a year with a 2 week black out. So I have time to cover some country. That's where I will start!

I'll say at least u have the right attitude! Sounds like a difficult hunt.

Just look at it as a armed camping trip and anything above that is a bonus.

I had an archery deer tag on 12 last year and I did find some elk poop. Closest thing to an actual elk that I have seen there.

Good chance to learn the units and should be a good camp.

I've been hunting on the Kaibab since 1972. During that time I saw one group of 4 bulls near Burnt Corral.

Probably a better chance to get hit by a meteor than killing an elk.

I was guiding on the Strip (Unit 13B) last year when a couple of Indian guys drove into camp. Wanted to know where the elk were? I told them I hadn't seen an elk ever in Unit 13B. One guy said "Well Arizona Game & Fish sold me a tag, so must be elk here!"

I told them to call AZGFD and ask where in Unit 13B there were elk,

I did hear that some had been seen on a trail way down south, so don't know that for a fact.

Bottom line? Good camping permit..lol

Dang Don you at least could posted a picture of a small elk.

When I was there in 2017 on an archery mule deer hunt, I saw several rubs and some old droppings over a fairly large area. Never heard a bugle or saw an elk.
